This is by far the easiest thing I've put in my runner; and I highly recommend anyone who needs outlets to buy this. i got mine for 38 bucks, but i think the guy changed the price to 60 somthing. install took 2 minutes max. anyways just thought i'd share my accessorie review to everyone who has wandered if it was worth it.

I also installed one a few months ago -- and I'm a non-smoker! Well worth the money to get a second power port. The lighted ring around the cigarette lighter is a nice touch, too.

Oddly enough, I drove a 2004 Camry this week while some work was being done on the 4Runner, and it had 3 power ports up front -- the cigarette lighter, a power port at the base of the dash, and one in the console. Now why would a Camry driver need more power ports than a 4Runner?

big question is where did you get it and what exactly is it called?
My 98 camry had 2 ports including the cigarette lighter. Need one for radar detector and one to recarge cell phone.

Just order the ashtray accessory kit for the 4Runner. Your parts department should be able to find it, or call Todd at Toyota of Richardson -- he sent me the one I have.

Yes, it came with instructions. Basically, you pop out the trim, then take out the existing box. Insert the ashtray box, connect two wiring harnesses, and replace the trim. 5 minute job.

Poping out the trim...

How do you pop out the trim? I played with mine last night, and can't seem to figure it out. I want to get to the 3 switch pop outs there and add switches there.

Just lift up on it. It's attached by clips only. IIRC, there are 2 on each side, and one at the top. Start from the back (near the console lid). Open the lid and grab ahold of the trim. Lift. Just keep tugging on it until it pops up in the back. Then work your way forward. Take your time. Once you get the hang of it you can remove it in a few seconds.

Now I'm thinking of adding some nice glowing switches in the unused holes, and thinking about what they could power.

I stuck a lighted OEM style switch in the dash for the driving lights.

One can't have too many glowing switches

I'd like to get some of those switches. Are those actual OEM switches, or just OEM like? Where did you get them? How much? Pictures?

Nope, they are not the real Toyota switches. They are Pep Boys OEM style lighted switches, about $12 for the version with the light. They look ok, but I kind of wish I'd gotten the real thing, as these end up being a bit recessed.

I'll take a picture.

Guess I could always change them out for the Toyota switch.

I'll have to check out the Fry's selection.


Someone had said, in some thread, that the Toyota switch was about $20 if I remember, but maybe not. I'll have to look into it.

I'm not sure what you're going to wire up, different switches are priced differently, OEM. Here is the switch for the inverter. As you can see, it's $48.59 at partznet ($62.30 list).
