Duh Moment. Dexron IV NOT ATF+4

I know.... I know. Literally my ONLY experience with AUTO's is with my current runner and an older runner that I never only drained/filled the fluid a couple times.

I have really owned a TON of manuals, so I never really dealt with the various multitudes of ATF Fluid.

So, at my last Toyota visit to get the WS, Sealed Tranny flushed; I was told my power steering looked dirty. It did, I agree. I know that the 4runners use AT fluid and not power steering fluid in it..

So.. I know it wants DEXRON III or IV, I get this. Wander into the Advance Auto... did not see DEXRON other than some ****ty AUTOZONE brand III. I say some Castrol ATF+4 and just assumed it was the Castrol variant of Dexron IV rated fluid.

I am wrong, am I not? I haven't ruined the power steering pump have I? I am doing the several drain and fill's of the resivoir method. I went home at lunch, pumped out the reservoir, put in some of the ATF+4 to fill it up. Drove a bit, exercised the steering.. then emptied and filled again. I figured I would do this a couple times..

Anyho...

Someone who is more of a chemist than I. Should I stop, grab some actual DEXRON 4 and start over?

I would get the correct fluid and start the process fresh..

No big deal, but I would put the right fluid in there. I got Mobil 1 multi syn ATF and just did a drain/fill with the whole qt over a week's time.

To put your mind at ease it really doesnt matter. The difference between the fluids is the additives. This makes a big difference in a transmission but means basically nothing on a ps system. Pretty much any hydraulic fluid will do.

I agree with Acid. Not a big deal for your power steering.
