dumb question - check auto trans fluid when running?

I'm checking fluids on my truck and can't figure out the correct way to check trans fluid. My truck is 96 t4r limited 4x4 with auto trans. Do you check the dipstick with truck hot or cold, running or engine off?

I can't find this in the manual.

Yes, you need to check the auto trans fluid level when the engine is running. You can check it when the fluid is hot or cold, but I prefer to check it when it is fully warmed up to operating temp.

You want to have it running, shift through each of the gears up and down (holding in each gear for 3-4 seconds) then put in park and check fluid level. that is what I was told at least.

There is a "hot" and "cold" line on the dipstick, so I guess you could check either way, just be looking at the right line.

When it's running is there fluid held up in other areas? Mine always seems a little high when I check it hot with the engine off.

When running, the torque converter is full of fluid and oil is in other parts of the trans.

When you turn it off and let it sit, the fluid will drain out of the TC and the level will be high.

When you stop for gas, this is usually a great time to check the level.

To answer THE question: Trans oil hot, driven and engine running on level ground. Wipe the dipstick, reinsert/remove and check level.

4.5 ltrs if it is just drained. make a run around the block and it should be hot enough to check it. Don't read the manul saying only 2ltrs(2.1q)...this is wrong
