Dumb question- running boards...

Just like BlairB says, it takes like 5 minutes total to take them off. Just try it out for a bit to see how you like. Personally, I really liked the look of the grey tubes on my Sport, however, it was really annoying to me when it came to getting in and out of the truck. I found that I never used them, just hopped out over them, or made a stretch getting in. So off they went!

I suppose having the running boards or not depends on one's needs and desires. One of the many reasons I purchased my 4Runner was the running boards.
Having elderly parents and relatives makes having the running boards and the interior grab handles very important when one transports them around like I do.
The running boards also come in handy when one washes the roof of the 4Runner and your ladder is stored in the basement.
Anyway, like others have said, remove them and see how it goes.

I take mine off for off roading but like them the rest of the time. I get a lot of stone chips on the bottom of the back doors without them and as stated it is to hard to wash/dry roof without them.

For the same reasons some of the other members mentioned, I left mine on for ease of access for other passengers and it keeps the sides cleaner when I drive in snow and salt covered roads. I drive my grandma around in it and she actually prefers the 4Runner over my Camry and other relatives' vehicles because of running boards and the abundance of hand grips in the 4Runner. At 6'1", it's useless for me other than getting my pants dirty.
I don't like how the frame is explosed when they're removed (mine is at stock height). It looks better on a lifted 4Runner as the height from the bottom of the doors draw your attention away from the exposed frame rail.

I like my running boards. It's true that you can use them to wash the top of the truck especially when you walk on over to the rear tire to stand on top of the tire to get the back top of the truck. It also makes it easier for me to get into my truck since I have my steering wheel height adjusted to they way I want it and my seat. With-out the running boards, my leg would get stuck under the steering wheel trying to get in. I was actually thinking about getting chrome tubes to replace the boards but they're like 700 bucks so I put that on the back burner for now. As others have said, you sould really dress her up a little bit.
