Hey everyone,
Does anyone know if the stock tires on my 07 4Runner (Dunlop P265/65R17) qualify as snow-tread tires? Just asking because sometimes SUVs with snow-tread tires do not need snow chains on the highway. Thanks!

The Dunlops are an all-season tread design. They are not the best choice for snow, but they did get me through a few New York winters.

they will handle light snow, but any place requiring snow chains or specific Snow rated tires will just overwhelm the dunlops

They don't qualify as snow tires. The Dunlops are an all-season highway tire and work fine in general snow conditions (mine have worked well in up to 12" of snow on bot unplowed roads and highways).

HOWEVER, if you need special purpose tires for snow, look for something with the snowflake on them. There are threads on here discussing tires for areas getting much snow on a regular basis.

I find that the dunlops don't work in any slick conditions. I cant wait to get rid of them. they are decent tires if you are looking for something to last forever but to make the 60,000 tread life warranty they are hard as a rock. I was in hard pack snow in the shoulder of the road and was barely able to get out.

I have a problem getting flats with these dunlops too. three of the 5 are patched, one tire was punctured by a 9/16th bolt!!! I have never had a flat in any other vehicle that I have owned.:bash: :xnuts:

I just bought some Continental Crosstrac tires, and can't wait to get them on the 'runner. My Dunlops are an ok tire. I don't do much driving in the snow though.

No problems with flats for me.

Save the dunflops for summer and get a good A/T tire or good snow tire for winter.

You don't have to spend big $$ on a real good A/T for winter if you know what to purchase.

my Dunlop AT-20's seem to be "cracking" where the tread rolls off into the sidewall. Is this happening to anyone else's dunflops or am I just really special? The truck is only a year old with 30K on it.:xnuts:

It happened to me. The tires looked like they had some serious dry rot going on. I've since replaced the tires, I try to check the air pressure monthly to prevent early tire wear.

No, from my understanding the tire has to have the snowflake on the sidewall.

Before changing my tires out I had the Dunlops. I traveled SoCal snowy mountains(driving in granny mode)with no problem up until last winter season. I didn't have any major loss of traction but I didn't feel confident about the tire since the tires were kind of shot.

Just yesterday going up to Big Bear the cop at the checkpoint wanted to see my chains(even with the new beefy looking tires).
If you're here in CA you may want to get a set of chains just to avoid any issues.
Honestly there were a few moments yesterday that I wish I had stopped to put my chains on. I'm not into sliding on a narrow mountain hwy.
