DVD players

Does anyone use portable DVD players in their car/truck/s for their kids in the back seat? I'm curious about functionality, safety and fitting methods.

I've seen some pretty nifty ones that mount inside a canvas (?)holder that straps over the rear of the front seats. Seems like a nice safe and close location.

With two of these things, each of my kids could watch their own videos (different ages/different interests) when we're touring.

Any pics?

Thanks
Mark

Several of us have done this...

Scout has a nice pic in this thread:

I purchased an inexpensive (<$100) Pyramid MV7SC 7"" widescreen lcd monitor and mounted a Pyle DVD under the passenger seat. My total cost for the hardware and cables was about $250. The portable DVD players that you can strap between the headrests have drastically come down in price -- so if you're only going to use it on trips, it may be a better option. But I use mine even around town when the child is acting up to buy some silence...

Thanks bryancos for the link. I have read that, but was interested in the portable DVD players. I like the idea of being able to remove them from the car although this becomes a theft issue possibly. The functionality of moving them from car to car to plane to boat to kids rooms etc appeals to me.

I just ordered the Mintek 1770. I have never heard of the company but read plenty of good reviews on amazon and epinion.com. I paid $250, but there is a $50 mail in rebate.

It also comes with everything you need.
Travel Bag
Two headsets
Y Adaptor
AV & Car Adaptor
AV Cable
Battery Pack
Plays DVD/CD/MP3/CD-RW
Built in Stereo Speakers and Anti Shock System
Optical Output and Earphone Output
16:9 Widescreen Monitor (7 inches)

One complaint I have read is that the battery will not charge while watching a movie. So, I'll just keep it plugged in.

I don't have it yet, so I can't tell you how well it works. I plan on using it for my daughter and only on long trips. Hopefully it will make the trip bearable for my daughter and myself

:D

EDIT: My first reaction was to get one at Sam's that had two screens. It was $400. But I then realized when I have two kids, they are not going to watch the same thing.

04Runner,
Have you decided on anything? I just got back from an 8 hour trip to Maryland. The DVD player worked wonders. I paid $200, but knowing what I know now would have paid a lot more. Worth every penny. Only if I coudl get my daughter to use the head phones. Eight hours of the Wiggles and Barney a lot to handle. :bonk:

Just thought I'd follow the link...found that it's currently on sale for $237.49 - $50 MIR = $187.49

Just thought I'd mention it. I don't have one (or any mobile DVD player for that matter)...that's getting low enough that I'd consider just getting one because... ;):

No haven't made a decision yet. Im stuck in Hong Kong until the 30th June then in Oz for a week before getting back to LA. Then we've got four days to sort out a DVD system before our first trip to Santa Barbara then on to Las Vegas for a week or more.

I've wanted to look around HK to see if I can get any deals on DVD here, but haven't had the time.

Eight hours of Wiggles and Barney ROFLOL! Know exactly what you mean! Headphones will be madatory in my car as the 11 year old and the 8 year old have very different tastes in movies and music. Besides which I DON'T WANNA LISTEN TOO! hahaha.

Your setup looks great. And for the special offers around at the moment...even better.

Cheers
Mark
