Dyeing Interior Carpet

Hey guys I've been pretty satisfied with the grey/taupe interior of my 4Runner but after getting in my friend's black interior Jeep and another's black '06 Sport I've been itching for black interior because who doesn't want to look awesome at the expense of burning yourself when you park in the sun.

I've been searching around about changing the carpet color and came across dupli-color fabric and vinyl spray dye and VHT dye was wondering if anyone had any experience with either. I saw one person on here who used it but their pictures were down and was wondering if anyone had experience dyeing the carpet and what they used/if it was a success.

Also my friend did like bed-liner liners in his Jeep and I was wondering if there's a product like that for 4Runners and about the noise due to lack of dampening.

I've done the carpet dye but I went with the grey because I just wanted to cover up my heavily stained carpet. I used duplicolor and SEM and I will tell you that the SEM does look better. If you search for "painting carpet" my link should show up where I've posted pictures.
 
This topic is good timing as I'm contemplating what to do with the grey carpet. It's 300,000 miles old and showing signs of the usual wear and tear. But, spraying it the same color sounds like a decent alternative.
 
I've used VHT plastic dye to change interior trim color from tan to black in the past. It looked amazing when it was installed but it chipped very easily.

No experience with their carpet dye product.
 
Yea I worry about chipping on the trim and don't know if I wanna dye, paint, or plastidip it. I know some say plastidip isn't durable but I like it and have found it to hold up well.
Does anyone have experience spraying bedliner on trim because that would definitely be durable I would think?
 
Go buy sem spray. It's the best it there hands down. Industry insiders only use that. That's what i use.

Prep is everything, application is the easy part.

Remove carpets from the vehicle.
Clean the carpets, then brush out. Did i mention clean the carpets?

Spray painting will make the carpets crusty feeling. .


Or you can simply order from the girls at accmats.com and get it for $240 in the color you want and simply just replace it. In a few days.

New carpets makes the car smell new. Look better then you can choose to dye the trim or not.

I did it this past spring with my convertible because a carpet kit didn't exist for my car.

You can thank me later lol
 
Alright I ordered some color samples from stockinteriors.

I think the charcoal would fit better with all other stock gray parts but if I want to say redo the seats in black then I think black carpet would be better.

I have since postponed this project but I saw stock interiors and really wanted to do that except that they don't sell the roof carpeting or back carpeting.
 
Yeah I'm out of car cash so new carpet is not happening soon but it doesn't mean I can't look at options.

Salvage yards are your friend...tons of 4Runners sold and crashed. Got mine recently after a crash and repaired the damage. When looking around for replacement parts, I never saw one in a salvage yard with the carpet removed so there should be tons of them out there with low usage.

Surprisingly enough I've hard a very hard time finding any 4runners in scrap yards. Also I think charcoal is the darkest option. I still would rather have bedtred like in a jeep.
 
From what I have seen SEM all the way, This summer I had a chance to go back to the SEM factory for training. It works and works well, but you need to follow the directions! Its important, to get the right outcome.

Another big plus for SEM is if you are a big made in america fella, they are an employee owned and operated company in SC. Almost everything is made in house in their factory there.

If you call them, you will get solid tech support, probably from one of the guys who helped develop the process.

I don't work for SEM by any stretch but the local support we get and then getting to see how it all comes together, how the company functions, using the products etc… Its great stuff.
 
I tried to die carpet and failed horribly. Did all the methods rit dye, sem and duplicolor vinyl spray. I didn't care because the carpet was so messed up i just tossed it. it looked tie dyed blue black and painted it was stiff. If you moved the fibers you can see the original color.

I ended up just using some home depot black carpet and new black weathertechs. I couldn't find a company when i did it for less then 500 or 680 for oem. post pics i might swap mine out

Go to car-part.com to locate the 4runners closest to you. Most yards will ship but I wouldn't buy carpet without laying my eyes on it first.
 
I saw this website and was trying to find it again but couldn't. Thanks!

Hopefully I can find some free time to paint the carpet and if that doesn't turn out well then I'll go to a salvage yard and pull the carpet.
