Dynamic Damper for 3rd Gen?

Thank you for calling it a damper, instead of a dampener like 99% of people do. So annoying to read about something getting wet instead of absorbing energy.
 
I'm curious...
Obviously, it dampens vibrations, but vibrations from which part of the vehicle? What is it like if you don't have one installed?

Tuned mass dampers are designed so that if the system starts resonating at its natural frequency it can dump it's energy into the damper instead of not dissipating the energy and shaking itself to death--assuming you're at that frequency for awhile. An analogy would be when your tires start to vibrate because they're not balanced, they've hit their resonant frequency and are holding onto the energy instead of burning it off (which is why it only happens at a specific speed, slower or faster and the tire is happy since its not at that specific frequency). Most things I've read is people don't notice any difference, if your drivetrain doesn't hit that frequency ever (or just for a small burst) then the damper never actually does anything, it's just their so in the event the drivetrain is held at it's resonant frequency it won't sit there vibrating like crazy and potentially breaking stuff.

You're wrong about this. Dampener is absolutely a correct term for it and the action is that it dampens.

Yup, it looks like I was wrong. I always thought a dampener was something that would get something else wet, I guess all of those words and derivations have dual meanings and despite two ways of spelling still mean the same thing... my bad

No worries, I used to work with a lot of pulsation dampeners and have had this discussion before. Even the companies that make the damned things use both terms for them, sometimes on the same document! That's what makes English such a PITA for people to learn. So many words with dual meanings and different spellings and other such craziness.
