E-Brake light is on

My E-Brake light is on. I am a new Yota owner and don't remember it being on before. It gets brighter when I pull on the e-brake, but never goes away. Is it toyota's way of saying "Change the Pads"? What else could it be. It seams to be getting brighter. Thanks for the help

You could be low on fluid and still have life on the pads and just needs the fluid to bring it up to fill line and light should go out, but keep an eye out on the pads or just change them.:)

Also like you say check the brake pads, when they get worn down the fluid goes down to compensate for the thinner pads, hence low brake fluid, letting it wear out to much you get metal to metal, damaging the rotors and get air in the brake lines, don't fill up with fluid until after you change the pads cause when you push the pistons out to fit the pads you'll overflow the brake master cylinder, I did what a mess. :bash:
 
Not only check your brake fluid in the MC, but make sure the float sensor is not stuck in the "low" position. I had that problem and had to stick a wire down the MC to free the float and it floated back up.

Well the MC is full. The front brakes are grabbing the disc pretty hard though. Good pads. guess it is time to check the calipers.
 
Dude,

Now that you know the MC is full, you need to check the float sensor in the MC, make sure it's not stuck at the bottem when it really should be on top (so the light can turn off).....

I am going to check it today. Hopefullythis will fix it all.
 
e-brake light

My 1990 4runner e-brake light will come on random.
Release the brake light goes out but,
down the road light comes on go around a cornerhit a bumb in the road and light out. I think its a lose wire conection.
Or a ghost, the truck is old.

Same thing happening with mine. I will let you know if I find something.
 
Could be the e-brake cable is starting to go. Happened my 90 before the cable broke. As wires in the cable start breaking the cable stretches a little so it doesn't close the switch by the brake handle completely.
 
Well here is what I have found so far.
1. I can push in on the switch inder the dash and the light still doesn't go out completely.
2. The float in the master cylinder moves freely.
3. Plenty of break fluid.

Still need to lift the back end and check it there. Need to also check the cable. Next project is the oil leak.

That might be just a faulty switch, try and unplug the switch see if the light goes out...only way to find out, then go from there.

(switch, connection, cable tension, rear brake sticky)

I had the same problem. Turned out it was a faulty electrical connection in the cap. The float worked fine but voltage was leaking through the connection and giving me a slightly illuminated brake light on the dash. I really got into fixing it when the cruise quit working. I like my cruise control:)

SO, unplug the cap and see if the light goes away. It if does then buy another cap. (provided of course the float isn't sinking which I think you said it wasn't...did you?)

I will try that. Matter of fact, my cruise is acting up too. thanks for the help.
 
Just went out to double check and if you unplug the cap the light should go off...if the cap is the problem.
 
e-brake

well I think I figured it out. The float doesn't stick. but it probably doesn't float either. if I pull it out of the MC and turn it upside down, the light goes off. If it is right side up, the light is on. Time for a new cap I guess. Thanks to everyone for their help.

well I finally figured it all out. You can either do one of two things. Buy a new cap for the master cylinder, or unplug the thing and check it the old fashion way. either way will make the light go out. By the way, this also fixed the cruise controll problem. Thanks to all who responded.:awais:
