The fluid level sensor in the reservoir is calibrated to trip the warning when it drops too low. Unless you have a fluid leak, which should be fixed ASAP, the loss of fluid is caused by the brake pads wearing. If you just 'top off' the fluid, you are ignoring the primary reason for the warning, which is to check your brakes for wear. They are probably about due for replacement. By topping off the fluid, without checking the pads, you are risking the pads wearing down to the rotors and causing them damage which will increase the cost for the brake repairs when you finally do them. Also, by adding fluid to the system, when the new pads are installed, and the caliper pistons are pressed back into place, the displaced fluid in the system will go back into the reservoir and it will now be overfull.
