E-locker cable conversion

Has anyone here converted their e-locker to cable actuated?

I briefly spoke with someone over the weekend who had converted the front e-locker on their taco to a cable and checked it out as much as I could. It doesn't seem all that difficult to make using the factory locker motor.

I'm just trying to get some ideas before I get too far into this.

I need a locker motor.
I'm a cheap ass.
Seems simple and less prone to failure.
Can be locked and unlocked under most any circumstances

but what I don't understand (sorry I'm not that technical) is:

1) you already have a locker correct? (based on your first post)
2) so why go through a lot of trouble to do this?

Oh my locker motor has fried and I need a new one. I guess I should have added that in the first post:doh:
 
oh ok got it. Perhaps time to check the junk yards?

Also have you cleaned out your elocker?

I was told once that when people think their elockers are broken, they are usually just full of crud and need to be opened up and cleaned out.
 
I've opened cleaned and tested from a separate power source and still nothing.

I'm thinking something similar to this for the cable, though I will have to find one shorter than 10ft. Throttle Control Cable 10 Ft with Vernier and Lock, SE860 / VCGTX-10

1. using the wire w/two female blade connectors, create a jumper between the plug terminals corresponding to the GREEN wire and the GREEN/BLACK wire.

2. Using one of the other two wires, attach the female blade connector to the terminal on the plug that corresponds to the GREEN/RED wire

3. Using the last wire, attach the female blade connector to the terminal on the plug that corresponds to the WHITE/BLACK wire. Since there are two, in the diagram below, I am referring to the one labled #7. If you can't tell which of the two WHITE/BLACK wires corresponds to #7 (which may be tough because the 4Runner plug is rectangular, not round) just try them both. One is a ground for the E-locker motor, the other is a ground for the locked position switch.

4. Once you've made connections 1-3 above, connect the wire off the terminal corresponding to the BLACK/WHITE wire to 12V battery (-), then connect the wire off the terminal corresponding to the GREEN/RED wire to to 12V battery (+).

If the motor is working properly you should hear it lock the diff.​


To UNLOCK the diff manually:

1. using the wire w/two female blade connectors, create a jumper between the plug terminals corresponding to the GREEN/RED wire and the GREEN/YELLOW wire.

2. Using one of the other two wires, attach the female blade connector to the terminal on the plug that corresponds to the GREEN wire

3. Using the last wire, attach the female blade connector to the terminal on the plug that corresponds to the WHITE/BLACK wire. (See addt'l steps above in step 3 to LOCK)

4. Once you've made connections 1-3 above, connect the wire off the terminal corresponding to the BLACK/WHITE wire to 12V battery (-), then connect the wire off the terminal corresponding to the GREEN wire to to 12V battery (+).

If the motor is working properly you should hear it unlock the diff.

(NOTE: I might have mixed up which procedure is lock vs. unlock above. Since your diff is currently unlocked, try the LOCK prodedure first. If it does nothing, I may have mixed them up, so try the UNLOCK prodedure. If neither procedure gives you a result, your E-locker motor is dead. The limit switches will prevent you from damaging anything if for instance you run the UNLOCK procedure on a diff that is already unlocked, or vice versa)​

If you test it this way and the motor works as it should, then the problem lies with your ECU or chassis wiring.

Search the username "Crolison" on ttora and yotatech. He did a cable set up on his a few years back. He's "generalcorrosion" on here though.
 
used actuator. e-locker

I just bought a 99' limited 4runner after a (3) month long search. I found one with RR diff lock. Yaa :boxer: well on my test drive I tried the locker. and yes I know how a stock Toy has to be set to lock in. "Just Saying" anyway she had the blinking light deal. this is not my first T-Runner rodeo.
So I put it through the usual course to lock it in and no luck. I picked this up 2 states away so it was evening time and viz was low. Anyway make a long story longer. This guy said he paid for the option but never really used it. So I just thought He'll all I'll have to do is break her down grease, clean and she should be golden. Well I just got it up on stands and found the entire face plate on the (actuator) busted all the way around the gear the niple part with the O-ring is seized inside the hole in the diff housing. F-cked I am unless I can find a used motor (actuator) but all I have been able to find is some overseas. not cool. if anyone know's where I can pick a used E-locker "Actuator up for 200.00 or less pls let me know 941-726-7665. And if anyone has some exp, on getting the piece out (stuck in the hole).lol I could use the advice. I am going to use heat and maybe try coming in from the other side. I can chip away at it. it is brittle. I can't get the motor off the pumpkin because of the niple stuck the gear won't pull through. So I had to bolt it back on untill I have time to take it off the road in the next few day's but would like to have a replacement there waiting to be installed. and the cable conversion just looks retarded with that shifter. hope I don't have to go that route plus don't have that kind a cash just bought this 4runner so funds are low.

This one's okay, but I think it would have been better if they hadn't used cheap cables. The setup in-cab is cool though.

I agree, nothing in this would be very difficult to make. The cable, handle, clevis, and ball joint are easy to come by. Machining the other two items, or having them made will be the expensive part. I bet you could get everything for about $200 if you went this route. Would be nice to be able to incorporate the handle into your center console some how.

Here's the thread people are referring you to. This set-up is a little ghetto, but it works. I'm sure you could figure something out that wouldn't as hard on the eyes as this set-up. You could always buy the kit, have someone replicate it, and then return it.

Thoughts on cable conversion

Has anyone purchased just the (actuator & cable) from chilkat with out the brackets and leaver. then used another actuator like this one Linear Actuator Push Pull - Buy Linear Actuator Push Pull,Dc Rotary Actuator,Linear Actuator Product on Alibaba.com

this way you can keep you stock RR diff lock button in use. If we can go cable system, but keep the electronic action in place, I think this would be the best of both worlds.
I just bought a T-runner with a broken actuator so I am just thinking of some options, playing with idea's. any thoughts of the subject would be cool!!

New stock actuator from toyota 913.00 used 350.00 to 813.00 this is what I have found from searching online and a few phone calles.
