E-locker retrofit question....

A friend of mine's younger brother just bought a 2000 4runner limited, 4wd, but no locker. He really wants one. Has stock 4:10 gears. He doesn't want to change out the front to 4:30 to match the 4:30 rears he has found. Go figure.

He has found a 4:10 e-locker from a TRD Tacoma as well as a 4runner axle e-locker housing (no locker in it) that I know will bolt right up.

Question is, does he look for a 4runner diff locking ecu or grab the Tacoma diff locking ecu? Or does it matter? I am in the camp that believes that the Tacoma one will work but want to check first.

As long as the intention is to NOT integrate w/the factory harness, either one will work. The only reason you'd want to shoot for a 4Runner elocker ECU would be if the 4Runner you were putting it in was partially pre-wired from the factory and you wanted to use the "RR DIFF LOCK" indicator on the instrument cluster. I'm not sure if that would work out using a Tacoma elocker ECU due to wiring differences between the two vehicles.

I am picking up an elocker assembly to swap into my rig Friday and had been wondering the same thing until I came across this little piece of goodness.

I am going that route and just getting a switch and wire and having at it to see what happens. It doesn't seem to be complicated at all. I do know that depending on the actuator, you may need to put a resistor in to slow it down and prevent it from jamming. But don't quote me on that, just seem to remember reading it somewhere.

Thanks BFAD. He can get a 4runner ECU out of the junk yard for another $40, so I told him to grab both if he could to see if any abnormalities do occur. He has the OEM wire harness along with the lighted switch. Considering he got the locker for $225 with only 53,000 miles on it, I told him it was a good deal, even though upgrading to a 4:30 would not have been too hard. The axle ran him $150.

My brother and his wife are expecting twins on the 10th (Oct.), but labor may be induced earlier. I think the twins have so many clothes, that they could not have to wear the same outfit twice in the course of a year.

No prob, LC. Sounds like he got a smoking deal on the setup. Congrats on the soon to arrive nieces/nephews, I hope they arrive healthy as can be. My Wife just had a baby shower and we got a ton of stuff, but she's still got two more to go. We'll probably be in the same boat, which is not a bad one to be in.
