E-Locker retrofit questions…

Hey guys, so I've browsed others e-locker retrofits and I can't seem to figure out the wiring. From what I understand there are three types of main body harnesses that run from the drivers kick panel all the way to the drivers side tail with harnesses coming out along the way: non-abs, abs, and abs + Locker. So I bought an e-locked rear end, with the wiring harness at the locker all the way to the drivers side rear seat along with the body harness that goes all the way to the drivers kick panel. So heres my issue, I took apart my kick panel and looked…the plugs are different than mine…Has anyone herd of the main body harness changing between 97 and 2001? The donor of the rear end, wiring harnesses and the Locker/4wd ECU is a '97 4Runner Limited and mine is a 2001 4Runner SR5 Sport. Has anyone converted their 2001 or 2002? Any ideas or information will help. Thanks Guys.

Check BigFishAllDay's build thread. He has a 2001 that he retrofitted with an elocker using factory wiring and ECU.

No, I haven't. Do you have the link by chance?

Hey nor_cal51501

I don't have a link it that guy, but didn't know if you knew Low Range made a complete plug and play harness. It has everything you need to include all wiring, switch, and it's all wired up. They claim it installs in under one hour. I haven't used this item...but have bought other items from them...all has been high quality!

Anyway...here's the link...

Ultimate Toyota Electric Locker ELocker Wiring Harness Kit by Low Range Off Road (TDI-ELWH)

Make sure you scroll all the way to the bottom...pics and info on bottom.

Good luck...and I hope this helps you!

Thats awesome!!! I wish i had seen that before I spent the $$ on the factory wiring harness. I think I figured out my problem….mostly…I have an older wiring harness. The 96-2000 have a different harness than the 2001-2002. I will either cut up the harness I have now to use the color coded wires for only the locker, locker ECU and the factory locker switch, or try and see if its possible to order the entire factory body harness, my wholesale price depending of course. I did however bookmark the other wiring harness…you know…in case my attempts prove to be futile.

what is with this Elocker thingy that everyone wants or has? i know these trucks are peglegs so does this make them posi, limited slip? were they options or standard items on trucks? where could one be had from?

4L + Locker engaged make 4Runner go almost anywhere. It locks the rear diff so both wheels spin no matter what. It makes a giant difference off road. If you want one, you'd need to find a rear end that has the Locker and swap the parts to yours. Haven't done it but might be swapping my locker from my wrecked '96 to the wife's '01. Then you gots rear diff lock + center diff lock.

so is this a part that was only available in 4wd trucks? i am 2wd. what would it take to get my rear into a locker?

I am. 4.10 was standard on manual transmission 4Runners.

I have a manual transmission with open rear differential 4.10. I just picked up a locked rear axle from an automatic, 4.3 ratio. I'd like to regear to 4.3 which will drive the car slower, better for crawling. I also picked up a 4.3 front differential axle. Which is easier: crack open my existing front diff housing and swap out the gears, or just swap the entire unit?

Also, if I swap out the rear first, in the meantime between swapping the front, will I be able to drive down the road in 2wd? Would I have to remove the front drive shaft? Any issues with lack of lubrucation from doing that? I read that some things need to be driven to power the lubrication.

I do not know what year you have; but I am currently running 4.30 gears in back and 4.10s in front. I have had no problems driving my 4Runner in 2WD for work every day. I have had it in 4WD while off roading on dirt and rocks. I did not engage the transfer case lock so I had no issues with the locker in back and front wheels fighting each other. I have a front axle with 4.30 gears; I just have not had time to tear apart the front end to install it yet.

Either way, you will need to remove your front diff. It would be much less work to simply swap the front diff ranther then open yours up, open the other diff up, swap gears and then reinstall the diff again.

You can drive safely in 2WD with the 4:30 diff in the rear. I would not use 4wd locked or unlocked because it will bind up the transfer case and can cause damage. Yes you CAN drive it in 4WD but it's definitely going to be at your own risk of damaging the transfer case. You do not need to remove your front driveline to drive after the rear end is replaced.
