E locker swap question

So I was wondering what it would take, parts wise and possibly the amount of work, that it would take to put a stock e locker in a 4runner...
You only need the 3rd member with the locker, and something to turn it on and off right? Which I could get from a Toyota recycler...

Now if I were to add this to a 4runner that obviously didn't have it before would it still only allow you to switch on the locker in only 4L?
And I thought I saw something possibly on this forum that there was some thing you could do to mke it possibly to lock in 4H also...grey wire mod? I could be completely wrong...

I just did this in my 4th gen. As long as you find a complete e locker third, a wiring harness (easiest from Marlin) and some welding/grinding skills it's pretty simple. It'll work in 2wd (and 4H and 4L) since you won't be using the 4wd ECU.

Just make sure the gears are correct for what you're running in the front diff.

How much did that run you for the wiring and 3rd member? An would it be the same for a 3rd gen?

I did my own wiring, but if you're not too savy with that then order a predone kit, Marlin has one and so does 12 volt guy. Comes with switch and everything.

I can do my own wiring and everything I was just wondering how much in parts I was I gonna need to do this. The installation part of this won't be any problem, making sure the piggy bank is full enough is though! Lol

Toyota Electric Locker Gasket and Hardware - Differentials - 1996-2002 4Runner | Surf | SW4 - Toyota

Low range has the hardware you will need to do the retrofit. I ordered 2 long bolts, 4 small ones to have extras, 4 of the 8mm nuts and the gasket to use as a template to cut the notches out. That is all the parts that the guys at low range recommended to get.

I also ordered the Switch shown halfway down the page to do my own wiring. It was pretty straight forward and easy to understand esp with all the references. Some of the wiring did contradic itself so I just used the instructions from lowrange. I didn't retrofit my stock axle because I came across a good deal on an elocker axle housing but I did wire it up with the switch Low range offers and it works great. I can use it in 2wd, 4hi and 4Lo.

The wiring needed a dpdt switch, about 20 feet of 6 conductor wire and the stock plug off of the e-locker. May be able to search through here for the pinouts and wiring of the switch but other than that not difficult at all.

If you getting parts from a Toyo parts yard, go ahead and get you a complete axle and bolt it in. Save yourself half a days work plus, you could sale the old one to help recoop some cost.
