Easier acceleration without AC is it normal????

Hi Peps,

I just notice something that when I shut down the AC my car have a better acceleration. I'm living in Phnom Penh, using AC is mostly permanent, except for some fresh night like today and notice that the engine run smoother and easier acceleration without the AC.

Is it normal? or Their something with the AC system that make the engine rougher when it's on? The AC is okay, it cool enough the car when their is no Huge heat. but you can see that the compressor need to be replace as when I go to my friend Rav4, his AC cool up quickly even after a whole afternoon parked under the heat.

When the clutch is activated it puts a load on the engine that is noticeable especially during acceleration. I notice this on mine all the time and I have a 5 speed. The manual is nice because you can give it more revs before shifting into the next gear.

Achha... That is normal. It is also normal for your AC system to take a bit longer to cool down as well. Every cars AC system is different. As long as it is still cooling down, and not making any strange noises while doing it, its working properly.

Yes this is normal... running the AC compressor puts a load on the engine.

Phnom Penh is in cambodia. The kingdom of wonder a lot of off terrain here. The only issues is the heat. My friends land cruiser transmission is dead yesterday during a offroad play.

Your 4runner will also run better at cooler temperatures. So it was a combination of turning off AC and driving at night!

Yeah, i love winter (in central texas anyway), more power, woohoo!

You can check if you have sufficient freon in your system by checking the glass viewport in the A/C system, its located in front of the A/C condensor (in front of engine radiator). After allowing the systems to get fully hot (drive a few minutes with it on) then look from top down threw siteglass, it should have few to little to no bubbles when idling. Lots of bubbles equals low on freon. Take it to a pro if you don't know how to add more freon. Happy Day Everyday You!

thats because newer cars with the weight of your Runner has way more power so less noticeable. You still lose power in a new car when putting load on the motor.

Everything driven off of the engine is a loss. Think of what comes off of the crank shaft in gross and net terms. Gross horse power is before accessory drives. Net is what is left at the crank output after the stuff on the front has sucked off what is needed. That's why drag racers run electric water pumps and fans and will even disable the alternators. An AC compressor is quite a large loss.

I have a 2012 Honda CRV which is very underpowered 4 banger SUV and I cannot notice the difference in power with the AC on/off.

New cars are smarter these days and the control mechanism is much better than older cars.

For example. One of the cars I owned. When you stepped on the gas wide open throttle the ECU shut down the alternator and and and AC to give you maximum power for the WOT launch.

This is just one example how newer cars work today.

Yeah, that is in an acceleration, but after the AC clutch is engaged it will drain about 10% of the power produced in the engine. The funny side is, I call it turbo, and turn the AC off when I need quick power! Very helpful for 4 cylinder cars! Also without AC, you get a significant improvement in MPG!!!

No, it's true. My wife TDI Jetta won't get out of its own way with the A/C on. Starting off on a hill, it is hard to keep the engine running with the A/C on. Turn it off and while it's still slow you won't kill it.

Agreed. You can especially feel the difference with cars that have a turbo(s). I definitely felt it in my 335xi.
