Eastwood Rust Encapsulator Platinum

I'm looking to do some rust prevention on my 4Runner. Does anyone have experience working with Eastwood Rust Encapsulator Platinum?

I've read plenty about POR 15, but haven't seen much about Eastwood's product.

I don't have an experienced answer as I'm heading down this rusty road myself.

But what I did do that I found really informative was this:

Go to Eastwood's YT home page.
In the search box, type in rust.
All their YT's on all their various rust products will come up.
There are several, and I found watching 5-6 of them very educational.
Depending on what kind of rust you're dealing with, there are several different attack methodologies available.

Their different YT's on their various rust products allows you to really zero in on what you want to do and what to use and Why That.

I’ve wasted time with the POR 15 product. I now use NHOU and its an oil that penetrates the rust to stop the oxidation. Works great and it comes in clear or black. Its $25 /rattle can.

The inhibitors, meshed together in a chain link, are then used by the environment – contaminants, salts, etc… – before the metal is rusted.
Creeps and Self Healing
NH Oil Undercoating® is designed to creep deep into cracks, crevices, spot welds, seams, folds and provide protection there as these areas up prone to hold moisture and are unprotected. Sounds like a decent product similar to Fluid Film, but I’m not buying that the creeping action will adequately coat the inside of our frames because there are just too many inaccessible areas. At $25 per can, I can also see easily spending several hundred dollars to “try” to get the inside adequately. Good to know about stuff like this though, thanks for posting about it.

Nice tip on their youtube channel. Looking to supplement that information with some less biased "real world" reviews.

I just finished coating my rear axle in POR-15 and did a top coat of Eastwood's 2K chassis paint.

I did notice when looking at the product page for the Eastwood Platinum product that their coating is UV-resistant which is something POR-15 isn't and why a topcoat is required for longevity. I don't think the Eastwood product being UV-resistant is enough to forego a top coat personally but it definitely doesn't hurt.

I don't think either product is going to work as intended if your area isn't prepped and cleaned properly prior to application. If prepped properly, I'd imagine the difference in products is negligible in day-to-day usage.

What you select is also based on its application. I decided to go with POR-15 as I did not want to wait 7+ days for the Eastwood product and I will be applying a top coat to match the car color since my area is in the engine bay.

Fortunately, I’ve got an Eastwood local to me I can pickup from.

I did see that video and found it helpful. It’s the most basic rust encapsulator however. I do wonder how the platinum would have performed.

I've used POR15's caliper paint. It's holding up well after 2 years.

My hitch receiver and rearmost cross member are done in RustBullet (2x grey base coats and 2x black top coats), which is holding up well after 4 years.

I read stories of POR15 stripping off of clean parts due to its inability to cling to non-rusted parts. So I chose RustBullet to do the hitch, which worked out fine. The can of black they sent was cold molasses, so they sent me another one that was actual paint... quality control problem.

It's likely that the products intended purpose, prep and installation method are all more important than one brand vs the other. A friend of mine did his land cruiser axles with POR15. A hammer and chisel couldn't remove the stuff.

I agree POR 15 was a lot of work and started peeling off the next year. Waste of money in the Northeast.
