Background: I replaced my transmission about 2 years and 10k miles ago with one off an '88 junker I bought for parts. We kept the speedometer gear off the original transmission, in case there was a difference in gauges.
Since replacing my transmission, I've had to replace the speedometer gear twice, and now it required a 4th one! I can't figure out what is causing the gears to wear! They start to cup in the middle, clearly they are getting worn out somehow.
I have lubed my cable, and it doesn't seem to stick. As soon as I replace the gear, it works perfectly for 3k-4k miles.
When is starts to go, it becomes jumpy, then for a while only works while slowing down, especially when engine breaking.
Any ideas? I'd like to stop replacing the damn thing!
Thanks in advance.
