Eaton Truetrac Front Diff Locker

I have been searching for a front "locker" for my 06 V8 4Runner and the only thing I have been able to find as of yet without an air locker or Lakka locker is from Just Differentials. They list it for an 8" reverse front diff, part number 913A612, they list this as for a Land Cruiser/ FJ from 1990-2007, I have also found part number 913A609 which is listed for an 8" but non IFS, however when I go to the Eaton website they state its for an 8.4. What are your thoughts ?? I am not really wanting to use the previously mentioned options just because they are not my preference. If it will only work on the 8.4 what are the possibilities of installing that diff in my 4Runner ?? Or if you know of a different part number for me to use in the front that would be better. Thanks in advance.

Do a rear locker/truetrac and leave the front to ATRAC to take care of. Is this for trail running or onroad use? The locker you listed won't work for the front, Land Cruisers have a 8" solid front axle.
 
Seems like ARB or Harrop are the only options for the front. I think a TrueTrac woulda actually work pretty well up front with the ATRAC but I'm not sure they make it.

It is for on road and weekend off roading, I don't want a locker for obvious reasons, and limited slips wear out over time, and I don't want an air locker because they can fail when your compressor stops or develop an air leak. I understand some of that is unlikely but I want to be able to install and forget about it if you know where I am coming from.

I am unsure why they make them for pre 1997 but nothing newer, I looked up their website and it was the same information. I guess I one dot have one apart to compare the front and rear side by side to see what will work or at least the differences.
 
I tried to go this route without success. I have one in the rear of mine and settled on an ARB up front. Had there been one available I'd be running it now. I've seen that the Land Rover offroad crowd does this and they report success in running it up front. Just like the capability of the TT in the rear complemented with ATRAC, I would see it a plus up front as well in most conditions.

My research stopped just short of calling Eaton on the availability / possibility of having a front one. Maybe try that. I like mine so much I want to upgrade my MY19 with a TT, but with the different diff size it does not seem to be an option I see right now.

New to the 4th gen game, but I've had a couple 3rd gens and a taco with an elocker. A locked 3rd gen will get you pretty much anywhere you need to go. Obviously these 4th gens are a bit bigger and less nimble but I'd assume you'd be fine with having just the rear locked. Another thing to consider with having an automatic locker in the front is these v8s are full time 4 wheel drive. I think you would encounter some sketchy driving situations with an automatic locker in the front on a fulltime 4wd truck. I have a solid axle first gen with a detroit in the front and it is a bear when locked and gives your shoulders a workout.

Yes a locker up front is a completely different animal than an LSD. The LSD option like a TT offers 100% drivability in all conditions rather than the on/off nature of the lockers. This is why I went this route at least for the rear of my truck. Some cars even have this stock (Subaru STi and the current Ford Raptor quickly comes to mind), so up front on an AWD vehicle like the V8's won't be a negative.

So can you tell when the Eaton TT locks and unlocks or is it invisible in operation? Just trying to wrap my head around it when compared to a typical 'lunchbox' locker that engages under acceleration. It seems the TT does the same thing?

It is completely seamless. No noise or abnormal behavior other than when I punch it both wheels will spin up and let me drift for a moment before TCS kicks in and kills the fun. It's just a different design of how it goes about doing it's job.

I did a little research and it seems like a pretty good traction aid when it comes to durability and streetability except when a tire is in the air or has close to zero traction it doesn't engage at all, but I'd imagine at this point ATRAC will do its thing to help.

Man, this seems like a great option for a daily. Hearing my rearend click and bang on every corner is getting old. If I didn't already source an elocker id be all over one of these.

This is basically the whole idea. It's better than a completely open diff, not as aggressive as a locker. If a wheel were to be up in the air the ATRAC will significantly add to it's mechanical advantage. For the old school off-roader (no computer assists), some simple brake tapping/riding will help this LSD out.

The car will not move with one of the wheels in the air. If one wheel is in the air or has no traction at all, it will only take very little torque to turn that wheel. It is necessary to apply torque to the gears to generate the required thrust force to maintain the bias ratio. Without torque, the gears will not be pressed together and no friction will be generated, so the gears can rotate freely. The unloaded wheel will have high speed, but can only transfer very little or no torque. The helical LSD will send torque to the wheel with traction according to the bias ratio (~4:1), BUT four times zero still equals zero. This means the wheel with grip will not receive any torque and the LSD acts as an open differential.

Great find! Leave it to the Taco guys. I'll have to read up on it in more detail after I get out of work. If only I can find options for my 5th Gen (none right now).

I might be getting pretty much the opposite of what you have - currently e-locker out back but looking to add a helical/torsen up front. Do you think the daily driving characteristics will be severely hampered at all up front in daily driving or high speed/low traction surface scenarios?

The AWD (V8) I have already inherently creates understeer as it is, but I'm a tad concerned with getting even more understeer if I add an LSD up front. Not sure the truetrac types' ratio (4.5:1?) but the raptor seems to use 2.5:1 under power and 2.1:1 while coasting. to reduce the understeer characteristics.

I'm inclined to think a lifted front wheel scenario would be greatly helped by a LSD with ATRAC acting as a preload to get the front to lock.

Thoughts?

I run ARB Air Lockers in my 88 FJ62 Landcruisers and I rock crawl pretty hard with it. I've never had my ARB fail nor any of my friends. The ARB is the best option for a front differential hands down. If you need a locker you already should have a compressor on board. If you buy the mini ARB compressor they last forever as long as you don't mount them in the engine bay.
