With all respect to another member who's been around a while .... You are very wrong and presented a somewhat broken analogy.
We are in uncharted territory. Ebola has never broken through into the human species at this level before. The highest previous outbreak was around ~300 people infected and it was stopped.
It is extremely contagious , comparing it to HIV is just a bad analogy. HIV dies outside of its host within 20-30 seconds. Ebola can live for 5+ days (as proven by US Army) in large variety of liquid substances including basic tapwater at room temperature. Not special conditions - normal household conditions.
Even in a US hospital, the one infected patient who checked in and told the hospital that he had the virus, despite that he still infected 2 other health workers.
BTW doctors in Africa (from US, Europe & Africa) who were fighting this outbreak just published the largest study ever conducted on the Ebola virus. Over 100 doctors who knew what they were studying participated and dispite the precautions they took, it still KILLED 20% of them.

The "it could never happen to me" mindset is a dangerous gamble. Best to be alert, cautious and clean than unconcerned, careless and infected.
I'm gonna be careful on this one. risk vs reward analysis must be conducted. I don't like fighting something i can't see...
The same people who are telling you to calm down and not worry are the same people riding around in armored motorcades and private gulfstream jets. They don't have to worry cause its not gonna get them.

Well, now that some Americans have contacted Ebola & it is here, along with the general panic, I think that the incentive for the drug companies is there. You hit the nail on the head though. Why would a multi-billion dollar, shareholder-owned pharmaceutical company spend millions developing a treatment for something that only Africans who are too poor to afford medicine need?
If an inoculation can be devised, you better bet that it will fly off the shelves to the panicked masses.
It's a sad statement of American awareness. Ebola, like ISIS, was not a problem until Americans were dying... Too often this is the case & we're having to go through the much harder & more expensive reaction as opposed to being proactive.
The part being left out is the difference between conditions in Liberia and the US. Living conditions in Liberia are horrible which allows Ebola to spread unchecked. This is not the case in the US. My heart goes out to those impacted, the sick and dying and I hope the experts and medical teams can stop the spread. The need in Liberia and other affected west Africa counties for decent living conditions is the cure but that's not going to happen. The spread to the US is not going to resemble the disaster they are experiencing.
It appears that the 2 health workers were untrained in the proper use of protective gear. From what I have been able to determine the two health workers probably were contaminated by improper removal of their gowns/gloves.

But you're missing the point. In the post above this, you're explaining why it won't spread in the US, and in the very next post you're trying to handwave away an occurrence of it spreading. Do you see? It happened. In spite of all our first world education and sanitation and whatnot, it happened. It's going to happen again before this is over, and how we react and deal with it is going to determine whether it's a brief scare or an apocalypse.
We cannot f*ck around with Ebola. We cannot stick our heads in the sand and wait for it to go away. This thing has the potential to kill billions and devastate our way of life, and that's just by itself, nevermind the multitude of terrorist organizations who are certainly working overtime to find a way to make it worse. F*ck calm, we need to be very very upset.

He's right, you are missing the point.
Those health workers were trained in protecting themselves from all the viruses you listed and they followed protocol wearing facemasks gloves and more.
But here's the thing. Ebola is not like those other diseases. As I clearly stated it is much much easier to transmit and it lives for a long ass time outside its host.
When the CDC said that protocol was broken they meant Ebola protocol. It is not normal health worker protocol, it is different and difficult to implement. Most normal hostpials are not ready for Ebola. Dallas is a perfect example of why.

Also was it the federal government or the local government? There have been a lot of reports of local government overreacting in ridiculous ways.
On Friday they evacuated all of San Diego's South Western College (a local community college with 20,000+ students) because "a family member of a guy (with no ties to Ebola) had Ebola like cold symptoms" - Now that is a bit ridiculous but I know that local governments (especially schools) rarely actual rationally.
Personally I'm disappointed that Obama appointed a non-doctor as CDC CZAR. That seems just plain stupid. Its as dumb as appointing a civilian teacher with no military background as Commanding General All Allied Forces - just because he's good at politics. :shrug:

with regards to the protective wear that nurses have. Their protective wear is really meant to protect the vulnerable patient from the nurse not the other way around. I have nurse friends that have been soaked with blood from the knees down in ER situations. It just happens that way sometimes.
In the later stages of Ebola, there is a LOT of bodily fluids coming out. Unless caregivers are wearing liquid proof hazmat suits, they are getting wet with bodily fluids.

Patients with Ebola haven't been quarantined.
Medical staff with Ebola have been allowed to travel freely throughout the country.
Obama and his CDC puppet have first insisted that it can't come here, then no one will be infected, and that our hospital system is much better and won't allow breaks in protocol to occur--even though one of the most virulent and deadly contagions is given to nurses with minimal training.
Obama, ever the coward and politician, then appoints a stooge with his hands deep in the Solyndra scandal as an Ebola tzar--even though he has zero health care experience and his only goal is to keep the ass kicking in the midterms to a minimum.
We are politically correct and are currently issuing visas to people in the hot zone and sending soldiers over there to contain the infection--soldiers who have received minimal ID training. It should be noted that doctors who have worked with this disease and have taken every precaution have contracted it and died from it.
Until recently the biggest concern for CNN was how the piece of shit Duncan, who lied about his Ebola status and then through his selfish actions infected two people tasked with saving his worthless life, died, and now his family wants to sue Texas Presbyterian because that human-shaped leech Jesse Jackson somehow managed to convince them that the reason Duncan died from Ebola was the color of his skin, not because he fled while infected and risked the lives of hundreds.
We are too stupid as a nation, we have our priorities wrong, and our politicians are too busy protecting their jobs.
Ebola is our warning. It won't become the end of us... it's terrible, but too shitty of a virus to achieve the infection it needs to be an EE... but our witless, PC, misguided, self-serving reaction to Ebola shows that if we were hit with a serious contagion, it'll be something between Children of Men and Mad Max in only a few months.

It's a new "scary" virus in our country. A few mistakes were made that are or will be corrected before it becomes an "outbreak" here. Awareness is raised and plans are developed as a result of lessons learned. We have the worlds best medical facilities, resources, leaders and expertise. Within 8 weeks you'll be hearing more about the "developing NFL playoff picture" than you will Ebola.

We let it spread due to the usual incompetence and political correctness because our entire country has become a classroom exercise in liberal philosophy.
Good thing that it's not that contagious--imagine a highly contagious virus where those exposed to it were allowed to freely travel around the world without quarantine while those in power mulled over its impact on their re-election.
Most of "Fox news fearmongering" comes from their physicians, BTW, not paid stooges who run their stories past the White House before airing them.

It's a well know fact that Obama hates do deal with anything that keeps him off of a fundraiser stage and the golf course.
He was "assured" by the CDC that Ebola wasn't a big deal, went on to say so with his usual sneering dismissivenes that it can't come here and spread--and it did just that because the CDC can't issue proper containment protocols to hospitals around the country in a timely fashion (probably because these 9-5 government idiots can't keep breaches of their own protocol from happening in their DeKalb facility).
Also a President who harps on about secure borders and has a "let everyone in, to hell if they're unemployable, illegal, diseased, or a terrorist" immigration policy doesn't want to suddenly backtrack when we continue to issue visas in the hot zone to people who may be infected and trying to get salvation at the risk of other lives the same way Duncan did.
Obama is a pathological narcissist who can't say "whoops, I was wrong" EVER. He'd rather risk the safety of the American people and have his CDC director stooge get on TV and lie for him--while under his haphazard leadership breaches in containment occur and disease spread is limited by sheer dumb luck rather than proper use of quarantine and screening, which to this day has been for the most part voluntary and self-directed.

Yes. The President wanted Ebola to come to America......and kill people......because he hates Americans.......because he's a Muslim.........and the CDC called him when golfing to tell him "no problem", "We got this one", "Enjoy your round O and watch that bunker on 8. I'm sorry but I must disagree with you in regards to part of your statement. We do NOT have the world's best medical facilities, leaders and expertise. We may have adequate resources and money (don't let them fool you into thinking we're broke) but nothing ever gets accomplished. It's truly amazing that our country hasn't collapsed by now. They piss more money away every year than you could imagine. Are you aware there's a NASA program where there's a team of researchers that is studying how to reduce our "footprint" and impact on alien life?
The majority of our political leaders are incompetent or inexperienced. Not just now but has been for decades. Take your pick.
However I do agree that we will probably be hearing more about the NFL playoff picture than Ebola.
