ECGS recommends 85-140 gear oil

Anyone know why they recommend different gear regardless of the manufacturers preferred oil?

I'd like a resource to their "scientific proofs", but they do have experience as well. I don't see it being a warranty condition anywhere on the site, so you could just go with the factory Toyota weight. They did design the differential after all. Use what you like.

It's relatively cheap and it works.

Right on. I’m asking because I just got my rear diff back from them. Only wanted to get it rebuilt as in the bearings. Did not re gear or get new gears.

Curious if I should go with the viscosity that they recommend or just use what Toyota recommends.

I would use dino for break-in. Gear oil choice can get as endless as motor oil choice. Personally, I trust the guy who designed it so I'd use 80W90 and change it at factory interval. It works. With that said I've quieted down pinion whines with 85W140.

I’ve been using 85/140 after getting my diffs from ECGS.
I don’t know if it makes a difference, but I can tell you that
the viscosity and brand they recommend is way thicker and
very sticky. I figured if they recommended it then I’m going to
Use it. One less thing to worry about if I ever need to make
A warranty claim.

Yeah. I’d assume that the 85-140 is much much thicker. With fresh bearing rebuilt there should be 0 noise with factory gear oil. With that aid. I’ll give them a call to double check about warranty. If using factory gear oil voids their warranty!

If you go with the thick stuff, be sure and check for 1. Reduced acceleration, 2. Slower top speed, and 3. Slightly reduced mileage. I got these when I tried 75W-140 Mobil 1 in my old Toyota 4Cyl, 4WD truck.
