Eclipse AVN5510 or Pioneer AVIC - D3

Which navigation system?

I've spent a lot of time reading all of the old posts about these two systems and can't make up my mind. What do you guys think between the two? I like the Pioneer because it's cheaper and the package comes w/ everything (iPod link/bluetooth) plus you can get XM NavTraffic (although I have Sirius in my truck right now).

The Eclipse seems nice b/c the screen is a bit bigger, it has a separate slot for the Nav DVD, and you apparently don't need a steering wheel remote adapter, so that brings the price down a bit (but still quite a bit more than the Avic).

Since the price isn't that big of a difference I just want to get the better unit that I will enjoy more. What do you guys suggest?

I totally despise the CD/DVD drive systems now. I can't believe these companies are still making them. They're really antiquated compared to how they run against a HDD (AVIC-Z1/Z2) or memory based (Ken. DNX7100) system. Also when I comes to GUI's I think Pioneer's is the best followed by Kenwood's.
 
Yes, the HDD systems are nice, but the problem is that Eclipse has the best (by far) navigation function IMO. The Pioneer is severely lacking in comparison. I'd rather have a DVD-based system that works perfectly than an HDD system that's hit or miss.
 
Eclipse 6610 the most features of the Eclipse line and easiest to wire up compared to other brands.
 
Well the new Kenwood DNX8120 should be really neat. It'll be even better than the 7100. DVD-Audio/DTS/DD/DivX/BlueTooth built in/5.1 outputs/GARMIN GPS!/etc.

But the Nav is not built in, you will need to add it seperately which makes it a rather expensive setup.

I've used it, and I think it is better than the Pioneer system, but still not nearly as good as the Eclipse system.

Maybe that's the reason why we find Eclipse as the manufacturer for Toyota and Lexus factory navigation systems.
 
I like Kenwoods other functions better too though. Ipod integration is amazing.

User reviews of the units as a whole turned me away from eclipse and pioneer. the garmins just a plus.

Where did you find negative user reviews of the Eclipse? I haven't seen any negative reviews from a reputable source. Maybe you were reading an individual's own review?
 
Eclipse.

I don't see the need for a HD based headunit. IMO, use an iPod if you want to have that much music on hand. HD for music to me is more a PITA than it's worth, have to sit there and load up the HD, after the HD is full, you have to sit there and delete it. Unless the headunit has WiFi and I can easily sync it to my PC, I'll stick with a iPod solultion. I personally, don't listen to more than 50-100 songs at any given time, new and old, then I clear my playlist and start a new one.

Another plus for Eclipse PnP and steering wheel controls integrate easily, just like factory.
 
Yes I read the reviews on crutchfields website from people who owned the different units. I like hearing info from people who own the units and hear their specific things they didnt like about each one and I saw negative trends in the reviews of the features that were important to me in a head unit. Its nothing against the unit as a whole. What I read helped me decide which unit would best do the things I wanted.

I'm very happy with the DNX 7100 so I recommend it to people, but by no means do I make recommendations purely because one unit is made by a certain brand like Kenwood or Pioneer.
 
ive had the avic for about 2 months and absolutely love it!!! i dont use the navigation but as a head unit for ipod and watching dvd's it is amazing..perfect fit and looks almost stock!!
 
I am really happy with the AVIC-D3 considering the price. For the doubters, I will tell you that the Nav works very well and the database is very complete. I am exclusively on I-pod and XM, so the lack of an internal hard drive or two DVD inputs (one for Nav and one for music) is a non-issue for me. I-pod and XM integration are wonderful as is the bluetooth for handsfree telephone. All in all, I would recommend the AVIC-D3.
 
I just recently purchased the AVIC-D3 myself in my 06 4Runner and love it. Looks almost factory stock other than the fit kit has a bit of room on both sides as the unit doesn't fit flush but is barely noticeable. The Nav. works great and the function I like about it is you can map your location and it will pick several routes to take and you have the option of which one you want. If you miss a road it will automatic find another route and put you right back on course. I opt out of the ipod and wireless parts as I was trying to save some money but will probably get the phone option later and I have an Ipod shuffle that will plug into the bottom port. The steering wheel controls is another option I will wait on due to the $100 cost...no big deal for me and it can wait till later. Overall, I'm pleased with unit and they are going for about $699 but I was able to get a better deal than that which helped my decision even further. I also had them put in the new Clifford 3.3 remote start/alarm system. There are so many units coming out as well as the portable GPS units and you could spend months reading reviews and looking at cost and I just got tired of reading them and looking at them. Plus, the business had this unit in a Hummer and they let me take it for a test spin to try out the navigation and other options which helped seal the deal.
