ECM Update?

I bought my 2014 Toyota 4runner brand new back in 2014. Since I bought the truck it has never been back to the dealership as I have done all the maintenance myself. I'm finally getting around to updating the old as dirt Navigation from 2014 and have been thinking about possibly getting my ECM re flashed & updated.

I'm sure like most manufactures there are a TON of updates they have put out since I bought the vehicle new. The question is....is it worth doing on the 4runner? I know for some vehicles they put out great improvements such as changing shift points with the transmission and various other things.


Does Toyota put out the data for the consumer to see what exactly the updates entail?

Typically when it comes to ECM or module updates (headunits aside) there's not a reason to usually update them unless the manufacturer specifies it. So unless you're experiencing an issue that a TSB or Recall addresses there isn't much of a reason for the manufacturer or tech to update the vehicle. That being said, it doesn't entirely hurt anything per say... but there's no "patch notes" beyond TSBs/Recall documentation. Also there isn't that many updates for vehicles usually at least on the Toyota side they only release new software for things like ECMs when they do a Recall/TSB.

Additionally even what is shown in a TSB/Recall doesn't completely outline everything the update does like you'd get for most other software. So bottom line, probably not worth the hassle.

I program modules as a side hobby. For Toyota, they don't provide a free way of checking patch notes for module updates. You'd need a Toyota Tech-Info subscription to do so. GM has a free way to check based on the VIN.

You can find a random VIN online for a GM and input it in this website and it'll tell what they updates do for each module. When I bought my Terrain, I updated all my modules and noticed a difference/fixed radio-navigation issues.

Toyota never updates anything unless their is a regulatory or other major issue costing them serious money.

I don't think there has been any updates and doubt there ever will be any.
