Educate Me On PCV Valves

Hey fam,

Misleading title, 'cause I didn't know what else to title it.
Here's the short and sweet-
I ordered this kit- https://m.ebay.com/itm/Toyota-4Runn...-12261-62041-/271967852443?_mwBanner=1&_rdt=1
Because I was under the impression all the parts were OEM/Genuine Toyota. Here is what the description said-

I didn't cut anything out of the description, I only cropped it to make the image smaller.
Anyway, this is what I received-

Before anyone says "just throw it in; it'll work fine!"- yeah, cool. That's not what I'm asking.
In my opinion, their description is misleading. But what I am wanting to know is- is "NOVO" an OEM? If it doesn't come in a clear bag with a red and white label, I really don't want it. But are they flat out lying, or is it just misleading?
Anyone know who the OEM manufacturer is of the PCV valve? Another thing that is suspicious is the fact that neither the PCV valve, nor the bag has anything indicating the actual manufacturer of the product on it. I don't like it.
Lesson learned, but I would still like to be educated if anyone happens to know.

Thanks

Oh poop, I just swapped a canister Purge valve on my dad's Ford; and subsequently swapped the fuel pump/sending unit that the failed valve murdered.

I don't have an answer for who is the OEM for them, but I have to know why you are replacing yours. Did it fail the suction test? Is that applicable for these vehicles? What led you down this path?

Was there a major price difference from the stealership vs eBay? Are you familiar with parts.toyotaofdallas.com(they are great, a little too aggressive with fraud prevention for my taste but I totally understand why she fought with me) ? Not to be confused with toyotaofdallasparts.com(they suck hard)

That's definitely not the OEM PCV valve. The OEM valve is not blue. Luckily, our PCV valves are just simple check valves whereas other cars have fancy heated valves and whatnot.

99% chance is that you'll be fine. I really wouldn't lose any sleep over using a non OEM part in this application. The critical thing is to not let the valve get so bad that it plugs up which causes a build up in crankcase pressure and could blow seals.

I actually bought the same package off ebay and it came with a brown pcv valve. They main difference I noted were the plastic construction instead of metal (OEM) and white color. The hose is definitely OEM by the TMC sticker.

My plan was to monitor it closely and eventually replace again with OEM PCV and grommet if I deem it necessary. It may not be...

Just for the hell of it I did a search for NOVO, lol, def aftermarket, some CORP getting in on making money elsewhere. Fleabay seller making money misleading buyers by saying OEM, though it's a oem compatible replacement.

Yeah, I "knew" it wasn't an OEM part, but wanted to see if anyone knew better than me.
To be clear- I know it's not a Genuine Toyota part. OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. There is a possibility that it could be the same part as a Genuine Toyota labeled part- even if it's not labeled as such.
I don't think that's the case here, especially if the OEM PCV is constructed with metal!

Ugh, I see this more and more on Ebay, this play on words. They push something as "OEM", meaning the original manufacturer of the part you are buying, not of the vehicle it goes into.

So yes, you got an OEM Novo part, meaning that Novo manufactured it, but of course they hope you'll assume that they mean that Toyota manufactured it. Pretty sad.

I think when a listing says "Genuine OEM Toyota", like they did for the hose, then you are safe. But otherwise, "OEM" and "genuine", by themselves, mean nothing.

I used a piece of fuel line for the PCV and it put stress on the gromet and cut it. I had a spare OEM I replaced it with.

One of my 97's has OEM PCV the other is from Napa.

The description didn't lie, you got an OEM hose, a NOVO pcv valve, and an OEM looking grommet.

I don't think anyone claimed the description lied.
It's just misleading. It says "OEM grommet", not "OEM looking grommet" [emoji23]
Adding "OEM" only hurts them in the long run- negative feedback from me(or them paying for the return shipping) isn't going to do them any good.
Anyone who has been into taking good care of their cars for any length of time will agree that calling aftermarket parts "OEM" is misleading.

True. So you have to ask ... DO YOU KNOW FOR SURE ... that this brand NOVO was once an original equipment supplier to Toyota Corporation for this EXACT part?

Because if the answer is NO then DON'T USE IT. Anyone can label something OEM it doesn't mean anything on EBAY.

A good example of this the Koyo radiator. I believe Koyo during one of the 3rd gen years of manufacture supplied radiator to Toyota. So OEM in that case means Koyo still is producing this part and even if Toyota dealerships are not carrying it in inventory today, you know Koyo's part is good since they were at one point a certified part supplier to Toyota for that exact year and part.

:snacker:

BrianSD_42, exactly. Just like Senki 555 LBJs, right?
Even if a company WAS making parts for Toyota AT ONE TIME, that doesn't mean the part is currently held to the same standard it was before.
I only buy Genuine Toyota parts, and this was an oversight. The OEM Toyota label on the vent hose kind of made me overlook the other parts. Seems weird for a company to put a kit together using only partially OEM parts. I typically see all OEM, or all aftermarket.

.

Totally .... but also consider this. This is purely my opinion.

Did the company ever produce this exact part for our years of 4Runner directly as an actual parts supplier to Toyota during the years 3rd gens were in production?

---> If yes then that is the best option of OEM. But you are correct it is not a guarantee that the OEM version manufactured now (example by Koyo) is up to par.

--> If no then don't buy it at all

:car:

BTW I am not convinced that the "NOVO PCV Valve" you bought was ever an actual part directly manufactured for Toyota during our years of 3rd Gen production. So it does not meet the definition above in the same way that a Koyo radiator would. As for the Senki 555 LBJ also ... what do we really know for sure? Pretty sketchy.

We both have 2001s and the part # I bought was 12204-62010

The one you received looks different than the OEM Toyota one I received

Yeah, it worked! Haha BrianSD_42, I'm certain NOVO was never an OEM for Toyota for the PCV valve as well.

The complication is how do we even check this? I usually rely on what other folks have stated on the forum. Is there a website that shows all the true OEMs per part? I doubt it.
