We are showing an EGR Code 71. I applied vacuum to the EGR valve while idling and the motor stalls out, supposedly indicating it's working. I reset the code and had it reappear very shortly thereafter. My next step will be to disconnect the vacuum hoses and shoot some compressed air through them to see if they are clogged. I saw someone put a resistor into an electrical plug to resolve this issue but I would rather not get into baling wire fixes if I don't have to. Anyone have this issue and solve it? It's a 1993 3.0 automatic. Also, is this related to the funky seasonally low idle when the motor is warm once the outside temp has now warmed up?

Had the same problem, decided to try the 10ohm resistor trick and it worked! Simple to install, no more CEL but I am still not sure what my real problem is. Since I am thinking about deleting the EGR valve anyway, I am not too concerned. My past experience with EGR valves, on most vehicles, is that a well tuned motor will run as clean (or cleaner) without them. And probably run better, which mine does! With that being said, I am still wondering if my gas mileage would be better with the valve connected. Lots of info on this code 71 subject.

New to this so not sure where to ask relative to these answers. I have a 94 4runner, 300,000 plus miles with a code 71 and the vehicle will stall in the warmer months after driving say for an hour or two and then after waiting for thirty minuets or so it will start and run okay. This stall can then repeat after an hour or so. I new at this and not very mechanical but seems what is being discussed here applies. But I haven't heard anyone speaking as to the stalling per say. Any suggestions? Thanks. Timbo
