Egr Valve.....

Hi, I just need a little guidance... ...I have been getting TERRIBLE gas milage and was recomended to check and possibly replace the EGR valve on my 99 4runner. Here is where the problem lies... ...my Hays manual shows one but no part store carrys one. I called the dealer and they don't have a part number for an EGR valve for a 99 4runner. I got about a foot of snow last night and have not had a chance to get under the hood and look but does my truck have one... ...is it possible to run properly without one? Also... ...are there any suggestions for the terrible gas milage? I am putting in new fuel injectors tomorrow... ...any other suggestions?

The Hays should show a picture and location of the EGR. Then look in your own engine compartment. For your vehicle, I would guess that EGRs came on California emissioned vehicles. Look for tubes coming off the exhaust manifold running to a valve looking widgit. I know this isn't a great explanation, but its difficult without pictures.

There's a whole host of things to check to improve mileage...

air filter
fuel filter
tires/air pressure
dragging brakes/parking brake
spark plugs/wires
distributor cap and rotor (don't know if your 99 has these)
catalytic converter
pcv valve
alignment
clogged EGR (if equipped)
fuel pump
injectors

Fuel injectors are one of the most reliable components on the vehicle. Even my Jeep with over 200,000 miles has the original ones on it. They never need to be cleaned either!!

The erg valve dilutes the gas mixture in the combustion chamber and reduces the temp. If it is does not open properly then the mixture will be rich and pinging should be heard (but many t4r have knock sensors, which can mask this

Had to revive this because I found exactly the opposite. The fuel injectors on this gen are known to have issues. Just replaced mine and it fixed my misfire codes.
