I work for Infiniti, and my parts department just sold a brand new set of headlight assemblies to a local bodyshop for a 2012 M37 that was involved in a front end collision. According to the bodyshop, the lamps themselves are intact, but the mounting harware was damaged when the front end crumpled, and the only way to fix them was by replacing them. Since the lamps come with everything, bulbs, projectors, ballasts, etc, I was thinking of using these headlights to retrofit into my truck insead of buying a FXR kit from TRS. They retail for about $1,200/ea, and I'm assuming the quality of parts is better than what would come from TRS. I'm wondering how hard it would be to retrofit.

If you can get the different shape to play nice with the 4runner body, then go for it, though you have to recognize that you are trading functional, cheap to replace parts with very expensive to replace parts... so maybe don't make any permanent modifications to your runner so that you can go back to stock if you get tapped and the light gets damaged.

Worst case scenario, you are out the cost of the 4runner housings which won't be too expensive if you find some decent used or Ebay ones.

yep, that's exactly what I'd do. I found a set of glass assemblies on amazon for $59, and they got good reviews, so that's the route I'm going to go.

Be careful about the heat issue on the Amazon units, cheap headlights have a tendency to melt easier than OEM stuff. The glass lens will help though. Just watch the reflector portion once you run the HID projectors in them and see how they hold up.

The reflectors are getting painted black and don't serve much of a purpose.

I have a set of FX projectors, bulbs, and projector shrouds gathering dust for my HID project. I am looking for a pair of ballasts for the cheap.

I know the Nissan Murano are some of the better stock projectors, and Nissan = Infinity more or less. I bet you could find plenty of info on the M37's on HIDPlanet.com, they're the T4R.org of Projectors! Would be the cheapest retro I've ever seen!

You will want to cut up the cheap non-Toyota reflector housing but swap on the Toyota plastic adjustable assembly because it is higher quality. You could try to keep the Toyota assemble as a complete piece and sell it but I suggest you do what I said above.

I remember seeing a post where someone had done this exact same thing. They retrofitted some projectors into a 4Runner headlight assembly...just can't remember where I saw it. He had pics and it looked awesome! I would definitely only use a set of glass lenses!

That way, you know what you're getting into. Not to mention, there is a warranty.

You CAN make those work in the Toyota housing, but how do you know they didn't suffer some kind of serious internal complications that would make them either unuseable, wear down quicker, or worse, short out and burn your truck to the ground.

The only thing you're paying 1200 for is the NAME.

Go with TRS. You know what you're getting, how it's going to work, and a price that doesn't come with a mark-up just because of the name.
