Electric/carbon? burning odor

I have a 95 4x4 4runner. Recently, I had a bypass line rupture resulting in the overheating of the engine. Parked it and the next morning fixed the line and engine ran as normal. However, now there is this burning odor that is pretty pungent when at idle and stopped and goes away as I drive. (Heater is on and it's 25 degrees outside). No smoke and odor dissipates rather quickly after I turn the motor off. Could this be antifreeze from the over heat? I have never smelled this odor before, like I said in the subject field, electric/carbon odor?
It appears to be coming from the engine compartment on the passenger side, possibly around the fuse boxes? This concerns me!

Has anyone ever had this happen to them?

I don't know what it could be, but anti-freeze has a kind of sweet smell to it when it is burning. Have you gotten out and looked for any obvious signs such as smoke or signs of heat like melted wires/plastic? Cooling systems are pretty basic. I don't think this would have anything to do with changing a line.


Make sure you have a fire extinguisher just in case!

No sweet smell, for sure. I was hopeful what ever it was, would burn off and go away. Yes, I have looked for all obvious signs. Thanks for the tip about the fire extinguisher, good idea...thanks for the reply! Btw, you have 2 nice trucks!

There have been times I have been very glad I have had my fire extinguisher. Every time has been on a friends jeep. No joke. :becky:

You may have knocked off the vsv vac lines, then re-plugged on the tubes under center plenom pass side wrong. The hoses are numbered so look under the hood for the decal. My guess is the egr and fuel regulator hoses are connected backwards.

Next to the egr valve is the modulator, its a filter to keep carbon out of the egr valve that can get clogged up. The top cap pulls off to access the filter. Heres a better picture thread:
