Electronic buzzing noise upon start up

Initially I was thinking maybe something got in there like a leaf or a fan blade got bent or something, but listening to it, Nope. It sounds exactly like a cheap shop vac.

Bearing going out on the motor?
Motor or housing mount going bad or broken and is allowing the entire thing to vibrate against something?

Shop vacs typically sound like that because the motors and fans are cheaply made and not individually balanced so they vibrate the entire canister making a crap ton of noise in the process...

I literally does sound like a shop vac... however there is ONLY audible noise and no vibrations of any kind.. at least that I can feel. I also found that if I touch the gas pedal in any way the noise stops until revs drop back to idle. So far this has still affected nothing except me wanting to know wtf it is doing lol

Im sure if there is a will there is a way. However the pump it self is in a pretty inconvenient spot. Can anybody think of any negative affects of just ignoring this? Other then warming the earth. :surfer:

Eh, I mean the pump technically still works; its just loud as hell is all.

I forgot about this; there's a TSB for the Tundra's to replace them with an updated part. If I remember right, what happens is water/moisture gets in the pump and mucks up/corrodes the internals and they get noisy and/or fail. Unfortunately I'm not sure the TSB will transfer over to the 4th Gen (much in the same way that the Tundra has an updated drive belt tensioner TSB, but the 2UZ-FE in the 4th gens seems to already have it installed from when I checked on my own vehicle a while back), not to mention the warranty will more than likely not transfer.

This the secondary air injection system failure. The tsb for tundra will most likely not cover it.

I installed a bypass module and block off plates. You should either bypass or fix this issue because if it gets bad enough you will trip engine codes and it could put your truck in limp mode and/or cause you to fail emissions when you try to get your inspected.

Search for air injection pump, secondary air pump, etc.

Check my build for the bypass module install. You basically install a solid state module that tricks the ecu into thinking the air intake temp is above 41 degrees. You can wire a relay and resistor setup to trick it as well.

Thanks for the info.. I will look into the block off plate.

Is there a "Better" or updated tensioner pully for the 4runner as well? I think mine might actually have a slight chirp to it as well. And the belt is in good shape.

Do you think its worth trying the dealer and explaining to them the research done and what was found on the same engine on tundra's. See if they cover anything? worst they can say is no right?

It's worth a shot. Like you said, worst they can say is no. The pumps that fail are not that expensive. But they're located under the manifold so the labor is a bear and then there's no guarantee they won't fail again. With the tundras, they changed the location to one of the fenders after all the issues.

I've owned my truck for about 2 years now and until recently never heard this noise.

On a cold start up. After a night of sitting or so.. Upon start up there is an obvious loud electronic buzzing noise for approx 20 seconds.. Almost like a cellphone on vibrate sound. Then its gone for the entire day. Any clue what it is?

Hi - I've got a 2005 4Runner with just under 90k miles that I bought new...and have just started having this same problem. Sound stops after about 20 sec...and on cold start only. I know it's been a while for you, but what did you end up doing? Also - it doesn't seem to be really affecting anything. Runs normal, etc. Do you know...is there any downside to just leaving it alone?
Any info is very appreciated.
thks!!

Dave

yes, do not leave it alone.. get the kit from SLYFOX on here. See thread for secondary air pump failures.

The fix is quick and cheap and DIY compared to thousands to repair if ignored.
