elocker question

Hi, I have a 2001 4runner 4wd with a 4.10 gear ratio. I found a rear axle with an elocker off a 99 tacoma for sale on Craigslist. The seller does not own the vehicle that the axle came out of. The seller says it has 4.10 gearing but I'd like to verify that before I purchase it. How do I 100% verify this rear axle has 4.10 gears? Also, what is a fair price if it seems to be in good
condition? Thank you!

Just to make sure you know what your getting into here. The Tacoma rear axle will not directly bolt in to your 4Runner and I am pretty sure it is wider also. You probably know this but I just wanted to make sure.

I was planning on just swapping out the 3rd member. Correct me if I'm wrong but as long as the gearing matches it should be a direct swap right?
Thanx

It takes a good bit of work to make an elocker fit into a non elocker housing. If you hunt around you can find an elocker housing for the 4Runner.

If you do decide to modify your existing housing you have to cut a notch for the actuator, tap some new stud holes, and then make sure you have all the metal shavings out of the axle. This is an EXTREMELY simplified set of directions. I know a few people who have taken on the project who were very capable and they all said it was a bigger project than expected but was doable.

Thank you

Its a good thing I didn't buy this axle. Sounds like a lot of work. I'll probably do it eventually but just not in a huge rush to do this mod. I appreciate the info

If I had not scored a hot deal on matching front/ rear axles with an elocker rear that was a fresh rebuild I would have stayed on the track to drop in an ARB locker in back. I am still debating an ARB air compressor for trail/ camp use still. Now I am lacking the locker use as a reason though.

So my 2 cents - if you find a hot deal go for the elocker. Otherwise just go ARB. More money up front but worlds easier in the long run. If the ring gear breaks a spare is super easy to find. Know how many spare elocker housings I have seen? None.
