elocker trouble

When trying to remove the elocker actuator from the axle, the back plate (the part against the axle) crumbled to pieces. I'm not so worried about fixing the locker right now. I'm just curious if the truck is safe to drive, assuming I plug the hole so that it won't leak. Is it possible for the sliding gear to move around and lock the diff when driving around? Since there will be nothing there to hold it in place.

I would doubt it, I assume Toyota would have the foresight to do a "fail open" setup. I drove my new e-locker for a while without power before i hooked it up. But a crumbling mount point on an rear chunk leads me to believe you have a bigger problem with rust. Call East Coast Gear Supply, they may have a refurb or a new rear chunk shell you can buy cheap, they are also the only ones I would trust to answer your question definitively. (919) 672-2705

Actually, yes, there is a chance the gear can slide over into the locked position while driving. I took the pinion gear off the actuator when I was working on the locker, so there was nothing to hold the locking gear in the unlocked position. Eventually, after driving on a dirt road, my locker ended up in the locked position. I drove home with the rear end locked because I didn't want to take it apart when I was on the road at night.

So, I would say it is questionably safe to drive, but it is possible that the rear end can lock up after some driving. Then, all bets are off... you will have a locked rear axle, which isn't the safest, and your ABS will be turned off as a result.
