EMERGENCY 4 RUNNER DIED (caps)

So my '97 runner died today while accelerating onto the onramp. I gave it full throttle and at 60mph or so it just shut off.

When I tried to start it the lights on the dash light up and the rpm goes up to 1,000 or so then goes back down. I know it's not the battery because the lights turn on and windows work.

Anyone know what the problem could be?

if its cranking, and coming to RPM and not actually turning over, it could be your ignition system.

Or fuel delivery systems

A friend fixed it in about two minutes. It was the connection to the air filter, he unplugged it and plugged it back in and it worked.

I'm guessing that "connection to the air filter" means the electrical connection to the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor, which is in the tubing just behind the air filter. If that was making poor electrical contact with the wiriing harness it should be checked, and if it's never been replaced, I'd just replace it. Might also inspect the wires for damage (did a mouse chew on them?) or a poor physical connection between a wire and the connector on the end. The engine won't run without the MAF connected.

Not sure if it applies to Toyotas, but on Jeeps (XJ)...it will stop running/not start if the CPS goes bad...
