Emergency Brake

Has anyone noticed the emergency brake is a little wimpy?

I mean anything more than just a slight incline and it slips.

I tow and launch a boat when ever I go fishing, so I am frequently on an incline that i would;

1. love to know that my brake is gonna be there when i need it.

2. love to not hear the nasty clunk and i forced the truck out of park becuase the entire weight of my "runner" is on the parking pin.

The dealer says the "e" brake is not a great setup and nothing can be done really to improve this condition.

Any thoughts?

I had the same issue with the parking brake when I first got my 4Runnner and spoke to the dealer about it.

He told me to be sure to push it all the way to the floor and I've found it seems to work when I do that.

I have a inclined driveway and it holds my truck and utility trailer with out the resting on the transmission.

Good to know, been wondering about the parkingbrake letting the truck nudge up on inclines.I'll be sure to 'set it like I mean it' next time! Thanks.

Yeah, I got the same advice about pressing the brake all the way.

I always do, sometimes I am trying to get the last click and end up over pressing which releases the brake.

Don't get me wrong it has some grab on slight inclines like a driveway but not the boat ramps we have around here, especially when the boats wet/retrieval.

Sometimes i set the brake the furthest down possible, put it in park begin the electro winch and can hear the brakes give and the parking gear/pin take all the weight.


Anyone know of any upgraded pads? larger, thicker than stock.

or a mod to fix.

When my 4Runner was getting serviced I just told them to adjust the e-brake so now to fully engage it I only have to press it about half way.

Yup yup!!! I have had this done a couple of times...if you just have them tighten up the cable a bit you are set!

It's a drum in brake setup for the parking brake. When you remove the rear wheels, there'll be an access hole, might have a rubber plug cover it. Position the hole at about the 6 o'clock position and you can access the star wheel inside to adjust the parking brake.

My Camry has the same setup, the FSM calls for adjusting it until the rotors doesn't turn anymore. Then back it off 6-8 turns. After 6-8 turns, the parking brake isn't holding firm. With 3-4 turns, you can hear the pads drag when spinning the rotor. It's damned if you do, damned if you don't. Just can't win.
