Emergency transmission help

I started the rig up to back it out from under the carport and back around to the front of the house and I can hardly get her into gear.... From drive she wants to keep spitting into neutral. The light indicator on the actuall shifter keeps flashing between gears and i literally have to hold it tight against the gear it's supposed to be in..... :wtf::wtf: I also can't get the 4x4 to engage correctly. It keeps wanting to stay OUT or stay IN 4.... I can't imagine anything I did wrong.... Changing fluids is about as straight forward as you can get......

What's the recommended fluid quantity for an 02 4x4 3.4L 4runner????? My Haynes says 2.1 qts......

Let it run for 10-15 minutes, then check fluid level

Will it heat up the tranny fluid in park??

Not sure, I know you're supposed to walk it through the gears if you can, did you check the linkage?, played around with a lot of stuff this weekend, maybe you bumped something

Linkage is fine, tried taking about ten minutes just sliding it Ian's outta gear, that's wheni noticed something was wrong.....

The 2.1 is listed under "drain and fill". You took off pan and replaced filter didn't you? Take a look at Haynes 1-35 & 1-36, specifically 1-36 #13 (continued from 1-35). It says put 3 quarts in. Take a look. There are more instructions after that also.

What did he say? Well, if you drained out 4.5Qts why would you only add back 2.1Qts??? eh?

Ever hear of paralysis by analysis? Use commom sense would you. Stop studying the book and just replace what you took out. Can you actually measure .1Qt anyway? Toyota gave you a dipstick. Use it.

Your first mistake was doing everything all at the same time. When a problem pops up, and it will, it makes diagnosing the problem almost impossible. Do one thing and then test drive it, then move on to the next.

You are probably low on trans fluid and forcing it to operate that way will only damage the transmission.

I drained 4 quarts out of my pan when I performed the first step of my transmission fluid replacement (and that was without dropping the pan -- just unscrewing the drain plug and letting it drain).

IMHO 2.1 is not nearly enough replacement fluid and may be causing your problems.

I agree with the advice above -- replace whatever quantity came out when you pulled the pan drain plug, then drive it around to get it warm, and check the level with the tranny dipstick.

I drained it into a pan already half full with diff and transfer case fluid, thats why I didn't notice the quantity difference, I'll be doing the flush and toppin her off this afternoon.
