It's not a finish it bare metal. And it's fine. It's from the casting.
That definitely does not look good. Get warranty if its not the finish. Block or casting should not crack.

I suppose Toyota could simply "sand and polish" these off to make it look better, but that's not a cost I want passed on to me. Especially because you basically never see these areas.
That is actually the timing chain cover and the head cover. The finish is completely normal. It is basically the way the metal is pulling from the casting mold. These engines are 100% leak tested to confirm that there is no leaking from this area in assembly and if it was cracked, it would be caught. The leak testing equipment is super sensitive.

That's just the natural tendency of aluminum to get that "wrinkle" finish when sand casted like most components are. Its not a defect, they just don't go through a very rigorous secondary polishing stage.

You are correct!! I was doubting you at first as it looks like the front of the block.That's one big azz cast aluminum timing chain cover!
Here it is in the manual.

I am super familiar with the 2GR from my days as a quality engineer on that line and the 1GR is a very similar engine, so I recognized it at a glance. haha

Cracks on finish
Saw these cracks on my new 2024 4Runner ORP with 120 miles. Noticed them today and can’t say I checked or even looked there when I picked up the car. Hoping it’s normal? Want to ask on this forum before I go ask the dealership. Thanks.
Loving the truck! Coming from a 2021 Land Rover Defender which spent A LOT of time at the dealer service center.

Rough texture aluminum engine exterior
Somewhere I read a statement by Toyota the texture dissipates heat better than a smooth surface. Something to do with surface area.
