Engine Chatter While Accelerating

Just to add, I had what sounded like very mild chatter until I did my timing belt, etc. service and it went away, may have been coincidental. Also, check your oil level if you have a leak and always use a quality 5W30. Good luck, and maybe it's valve chatter?

It could be his timing belt flapping under load.............

I would have to agree that that video does not sound like detonation(I believe it's actually called pre-ignition knock - is it not??).

I have some experience with it. It's more of a light, high frequency clatter or tapping. My old corolla did it for 10 years. Had to burn supreme gas. If burning regular I had to be gentle on the throttle at lower RPMs. After driving the car for 8 years I started doing the sea-foam in the intake before each oil change. After 4-5 treatments I was able to burn regular gas again! I think an excessive build up of carbon deposits in the combustion chamber causes it.

In my experience an in the gas treatment didn't make any difference.

They are two different things. One is from too much spark advance and the other is from something hot (carbon, hot spark plug, etc) in the combustion chamber igniting the air fuel mixture prematurely before the spark happens.

Yeah my valve covers leak, potentially my rear main seal also. I never let it get low and use Castrol 5W30 high mileage.

Apparently the previous owner had the timing belt changed a year before I got it but couldn't produce a receipt. Seemed shady but whatever. I'm going in tomorrow to get it looked at.

I might give the Seafoam treatment a go. I'm sure there's a decent amount of buildup on a truck with 310,000 km's and what seemed like minimal maintenance before I got it.

Do another video of the noise. The first video sounds almost 100% like an exhaust rattle. Your video sounds completely different, like a low hum.
I had a perpetual exhaust leak behind my cat that took forever to fix and made my truck sound like i cut the exhaust out behind the headers. Couldn't find it until I did this.
1. Dead cold engine.
2. Start engine.
3. Hurry
4. Stick your hand everywhere there is a mating surface for the exhaust components. (Mine was on the top of the pipe behind the cat) Feel for exhaust leak.
Exhaust leak could be causing the super deep note., but again, your video audio lets me hear you shifting and not much else. Run that sucker all the way up and over the noise points, splash some lubricant on your clutch pedal. Perform this in neutral, to isolate the drive train concerns. post new vid. Good luck.
 
I would agree with others that it is NOT pinging.

I had pinging on my 99 tacoma and it sounds like a coffee grinder, so much that It sounds like little pieces of metal bouncing around. When I put in 92 octane, it went away.

To fix it, I cleaned the MAF and found a small air leak on a hose near the throttle body.

Yours sounds like an exhaust rattle, or a u-joint.
This is a manual transmission right? It also could be the clutch/throwout bearing. Try and rule these out by putting the transfer case in neutral and shifting through the gears. This way you'll eliminate the rear driveline components.
 
That sound is what several of us 5 speed owners have noticed over the years. It's most likely clutch, flywheel, or throwout bearing chatter, but I don't think it's been officially diagnosed. It's been present and unchanged in mine for ~3 years & 20k miles.
 
One way to tell exhaust & driveline noise vs engine is listen while driving down a flat highway going about 60. When you are cruising at 2500 Rpm and no noise then if you or a little more gas in the noise appears ... That could definitely be the exhaust, at least for me it was.
 
I've had my clutch and flywheel replaced last summer so that's probably not it.

Today my oil pressure light flickered and then stayed on after 30 minutes of highway driving (in the rain). I shut the truck off immediately and checked the oil. Everything seemed fine. Started it up and no light. Drove for 30 km and still no light.

I have a whining noise that matches the RPM's now and I'm worried it could be my oil pump starting to fail...

Harbour Freight sells a cheap one that I have been happy with. You will need to buy an adapter 1/8 BSPT male to 1/8 NPT female (McMaster-Carr) to use this guage on the toyotas oil pressure switch port.
