Engine Codes for 1987 22re?

How do I get the engine codes for my 1987 Toyota 4Runner with the 22re and manual transmission?
I believe I've heard there's a 'shadetree mechanic' method of getting the codes without buying an expensive gadget.

And how do I translate the codes once I get them?

(yes, I realize if I search for a few hours on this forum, I may very well find the answers, but I have looked a reasonable amount of time and not found them)

Your going to need a Hayne's manual and a paper clip.
