I'd take those claims with a grain of salt. Remember, they are trying to sell the thing. Anyone can look at those pictures and claim 'no damage.' The truth cannot be known until the engine is yanked out of that heap, placed in another and driven for a few thousand miles.

For the most part, what I see in that picture is a POS ... though there are few nice interior pieces I'd like to get my hands on. :D

You can see where the drivers knees hit the under dash and it looks like the passenger hit the glove box too. Other than that, it appears they stayed off the windshield and there are no signs of blood on the interior. It looks like they may have survived. The frame members looked fairly trashed up front. I wouldn't think of driving that thing again.
 
I just found the claim amazing. I had no intention of buying, just stumbled upon it. Just amazing what people try to pass off on eBay. It's got damage on the left rear and left rear side as well and since it is a "salvage title", I'd guess the insurance company totaled the vehicle.

Correct, it was totalled and probably purchased at a salvage auction. Salvage dealers 'specialize' in finding late model wrecks that have some potential to be repaired and resold. Often times a repaired low mileage vehicle like this might be listed at 80% of a similar used truck or even higher. They are usually sold on the seedier used car lots or by lots that sell only salvage vehicles. Most of these repaired cars/trucks look good enough that you would not notice the repair without a close look.

One you know what to look for, however, the repairs are pretty much always visible. This has to do with the economics of the situation. To repair this kind of damage and end up with a profitable product, you MUST take short cuts. Paint quality is usually the biggest sign. If someone is going to go through all that effort to fix a wreck, why would they finish it up with a terrible paint job? To save a few bucks, of course. If they saved on the paint, how many corners did they cut on fixing the frame? Inspecting the engine and drive train components? Checking out the electrical system for safety issues?

yeah, I saw that on ebay too..

Surprising there are actually bids on it, but it could be people that just want to part it out..
 
$3150 is a great deal if you were in the parts business.

Think of just the wheels...or the rear tailgate?

If someone was to part off that 4Runner, they would make a huge profit. I would guess that a larger dealership would be interested in it. They would buy it and use or sell the parts as needed.
 
hell if this sells for under 10k then it's a great deal!

i'm always looking for wrecked 4runners and it's a great source for immediate parts.

so if any of ya find a wrecked 4th gen and it looks like it'll turn into parts, announce it so we can check it out and quite possibly pick up a few parts here and there :)
