engine died while driving

Same

Did by chance figure out the issue?

I just had this happen to me on a 2001 4runner. Turned into a parking lot down to about 5MPH after slowing down from a 50MPH road, 3/4 tank full, engine just died and the whole car shut down. Lost power steering, brakes, etc.

Was able to safely coast and put it in park, then it immediately started right back up. I was able to make it home and now I can remember smelling something electrical smoldering or burning all morning and it stopped doing it after the shut-off.

'97 4Runner 3.4L 4wd dies repeatedly in action

I have a more mysterious problem. I've had my 4Runner for about 2 1/2 years. The previous owner mentioned that once or twice, after steep climbing, the engine would die. An hour and a half to two hours later, it would start and run just fine. A mechanic suggested to her it might be a vapor lock.

Since I've had it, this problem has shown up after long, steep uphill crawls in 4wd, or after long drives at high speeds in the middle of the day, or whenever I'm pulling my trailer through continuous or repeated climbing. It's gotten a little worse, but only when I'm working it hard. And it always starts up and runs fine after sitting 1 1/2 to 2 hours. I have 340K miles on it, and otherwise, it runs like a top.
