Engine making an odd whining noise, has me baffled

ok, so i have this strange whining/whirring noise coming from the engine compartment that i originally attributed to an idler pulley. i haven't had time to get in there and check it out. i finally popped the hood (not a daily driver) with it running and the noise seems to be originating from behind the clutch fan. i couldn't think of anything that would cause that noise, but i'm not super familiar with this particular engine yet. so any ideas would be helpful.

Sounds like it might be the water pump. Pull the accessory belts and give each component a spin by hand and see if you can narrow it down, if you don't find anything that way try running it with the belts off and if its still there you may be into a full timing belt service. How many miles are on it?
 
i've been looking around and i cant seem to find any write ups on the water pump replacement. is it a difficult task?
 
would it be easier to do the timing belt and the water pump at the same time. not sure when the belt was done last. has 142xxx bought it with 115xxx on it, so I'm not sure if it had the timing belt done for sure. basically would it be worth it to do both at the same while I'm in there or just the water pump.
 
It would be a good idea to do both at the same time. I believe they'd need to remove all of that anyways to get to the water pump.
 
Do both at once, its an extra 11 or 12 bolts to get the water pump off. It's an expensive job if you can't do it yourself, the parts alone are about $300.
 
04 sr5 whining 120k miles

I bought the car about 5 years ago with 70k on it. It has been an great car but I cant figure out what is going on now...120k miles on car now...

In 2010, I was getting the whine of the alternator going bad so I took it in and had the alternator and battery replaced. It was fine up until this past Thursday morning. I'm pretty in tune with the sounds of our cars, so when I noticed the whine, I took it in to the shop that did the alternator. Luckily, the alternator was still under warranty, so the shop replaced it with a new alternator and replaced the tensioner pully. The WHINE STILL REMAINS! I've looked on this website, but I'm still not sure what may be wrong. I'm worried it could be the tranny, but in talking with people, they and I don't think so because the whine exists when the car is in park and neutral. I'm wondering it might be something with the differentials. At this point, I'm planning to take it back to the shop tomorrow morning. I'll let you know what I find out and hoping you'll do the same if you have any developments...

Oil pump whine

I recently had the timing belt changed on my 05 4runner V8. While in the shop, they asked if I’d like them to add some oil because it looked low. I said sure. The next day after I got it home, I noticed a whine coming from the engine. It was constantly there, accelerating, idling, didn’t matter. I thought it might have been an issue with the new pulley. However, I planned on changing my oil before having them check it out again. After a couple days of the whine, I checked my oil and it was fuller than it usually is. (After they added some saying it was low) I changed the oil and oil filter and returned it to the regular oil level. Whine has been gone ever since. Is it possible it was the filter? Or was the excess oil putting back pressure on the oil pump? I don’t know, but it’s gone now and I’m not complaining.
 
I know this is an old thread , but for people looking, what is often overlooked I call the false water pump. It is a bracket that the fan and fan clutch mount to. It has the pulley that the belt spins on. It has a non replaceable bearing in it. It will make a constat whine when going bad. I had to replace one on my last 4runner at 180k.
At 275k, my current rig is getting a new timing belt and water pump in about 10k. It will get that "false pump" even if it shows no sign of problems. Just about anything that moves will get replaced.
