Just got a 2000 4runner Limited 100k miles. The truck looks and drives like new(amazing!) I have noticed 1 problem though. When at a stop, in drive(at idle)I hear a low pitch/repititous thump or knock noise *only when a/c compressor engauges*If put in park or neutral noise goes away. This noise is not as noticable when standing outside moreso in cabin. If I turn the radio up a little I can't hear it but this worries me since I just bought it. I listened closey to the compressor but it is very quiet. Maybe bearing clearance? Pulley? It's weird cuz the engine is silky and quiet under any other condition. Thanks for any input;): Jeff

ive recently noticed a knock in my engine at very low RPMs and i think mine might be the gas im using, but im not sure because yours is only when stopped in D?

could it sound like a playing card on a fan spinning around and taping against something? if so do a search on here and on yotatech.com for the "toyota tick"

i dont think anyone has solved it yet, but i havent really been dedicated enough to find out why my truck does it.... perhaps you will be

The noise I have has been diagnosed as #1 main bearing, only when under the load od a/c compressor at low rpm's. I was told not to worry about it,however I hate noises so I may have it fixed. I wonder if I can just remove the oil pan to do it?

Easy fix is to turn up the radio, I have all sorts of noises and rattles in mine and that fixes them all. Well atleast the ones that aren't worth fixing.

That is exactly what a Toyota master technician told me to do!!

ive recently become a big fan of the lucas oil additive..im usually not a 'snake oil' kind of guy but a guy recommened it becuase i was whinning about my 3.0 top end..long story short the lucas and som 10w40 made it all nice and quiet...you might try a quart at your next oil change..
good luck
