Engine noise

I bought my first 4runner in Nov. '09 and love it! It's an '02 with the 3.4L which I'm not too familiar with. Everything is great with the motor but I have a question about noise when accelerating. When I get into it there is a lot of engine noise but to me the acceleration is lagging. I know the 3.4L isn't known for it's power but does this sound normal?

May need new plugs. I've had the same problem with 3 4Runners...

How many miles, what kind of maint records did the PO keep?

It has 125,000 miles now, had 112,000 when I bought it. PO had a lot of mait done at dealer or local garage. All the records I received were for normal things: oil change, tire rotation, fluid/lube, etc. Timing belt was done at 110,000. I just got plugs today to see if that helps.
