regarding the oil cooler, can it be removed and left off? or is it required? isuzu 3.2's have them but can be removed and run that way without issues.

What's your reason why you want it removed?i don't think it's possible since the block is machined to have one unless you can plug it.there is no gain if you remove your oil cooler some 3.4l didn't come with it.

There are block off plates that Toyota used in place of the liquid-to-liquid oil cooler, in less demanding applications of the 5VZ-FE.

Unless it's plugged or leaking, the engine is far better off with it in place. If it is plugged or leaking, I personally would replace it with a new one.

As far as I know, all 3rd gens with the V6 have the oil cooler. At least every 4Runner with the V6 I've seen, has it. It's located just further back from the oil filter, on the side of the engine block. Part #15710H is the engine oil cooler.

Assuming that there is space between the oil cooler and the exhaust, one could retro fit a uz oil cooler and run a second oil filter.

Just a thought.

The new motor I just put in came without one and so far so good. I don't really see how that small of a cooler really does all that much. Seems like one of those things the manufacturer thinks sounds good on paper but when you need to replace them they run you around $800.

What do you think the signs of not removing the heat from the oil would be?

I'm guessing that the engine you bought was probably originally in a GAZ Volga 3111 or similar sedan. A much less stressful application than our 4Runner.

A liquid-to-liquid oil cooler, is far more effective at shedding BTU's, than an air-to-liquid cooler. That's why they can be much smaller, yet still effective.

Liquid to liquid heat exchangers are much more efficient so they are smaller.

My motor was out of Tacoma and they don't put the oil coolers on them from this particular engine builder due to cost. They don't use the original cooler to avoid any contamination to a brand new motor. I'm sure they cool just fine but I'm not concerned about my motor being without one.

Isn't the oil cooler at the bottom of the radiator? Hence the reason T4Rs can even have the milky cooling fluid problem in the first place?

I thin a solution would be to plug off the radiator's built in oiled cooler and mount a separate one like we do for the trans.

And yes, absolutely a necessity and definitely a reason for its longevity. Heat kills and the more heat you can remove from the equation, the longer everything lives.

No.

That's the transmission fluid cooling "section" of the radiator and why people either replace the radiator or bypass it (or both).

The oil cooler is a distinct part. See 02SE post #6 above -- it's on side of the block and there are some forum members here that have replaced it.

Been wondering what the whole oil cooler thing is. Bought lines to it after asking what people would do to prepare for a timing belt replace. Turns out I should have looked this thread up before buying the lines. My V6 definitely does not have it. If anyone needs the expensive lines, I'd sell em half price since I can't use them... Dealer soaked me around $100. PM me.

Your water pump doesn’t have a coolant line off the side of it right at the thermostat?

If you didn’t buy the water pump with the oil cooler nipple, then you wouldn’t need the oil cooler lines?????

You have a 5vz with no oil cooler??

From what I gather the Taco 5vz didn’t have an oil cooler.

I was under the impression that all 4Runners came with the engine oil cooler.
