Engine or trans to make its way to 4Runner?

It's not out of the question with CAFE legislation and Toyota needing to repair its reputation. Also, many automakers are moving into eight speed trannys, so a five speed is going to look like a fossil in no time. I wouldn't be surprised to see a six-speed for 2012 model year.
 
Correct me if I am wrong but didn't the first few model years of the 4th gen (2003-2004) V6 model still have the old 4spd auto then later got the 5spd across the board?

If so, I can also see Toyota adding a 6spd to entice us in a few years to upgrade:)

looks like you are correct according to wiki: The 2005 model brought enhancements to the optional V8 engine and made a 5-speed automatic standard on the V6 model.

What were the enhancements to the v8 in 2005? I gotta 03 V8. Wonder what they changed.

If they throw a 4.6L V8 in the trail edition, im camping outside the dealership like sox fans do outside fenway the night b4 tickets go on sale!
 
I asked a Toyota product person yesterday if a V8 4Runner was in the cards for 2012 (since the 2011s will be carryovers) and the response, true or not, was "no one is aware of it as yet."

No manufacturer ever talks future product plans, but a V8 still seems like wishful thinking.
 
Well, then im not payin no $40k for a V6 oversized subaru forrester! I mean, cummon! Trail edition w smaller engine and no xreas? And they think ill be attracted to buy that? Ill pass n get a Sequoia.

Sequoia's are fantastic. Plenty of room, 4.6 or 5.7 V8, something like 10,000 lbs of towing capability (with 5.7), capable off-roader. Can be pricey though.

You won't find even a bare bones new sequoia for $40K though.
 
Ill pony up the $ for a V8. Dont get me wrong, id take a 4runner over the Sequoia, but i feel the redesign has made the T4R geared more towards suburbia than what previous editions have been.

Same with me. No V8= no deal. When I buy a new vehicle it better excite me and the current V6 does not. Sequoia is to big for my needs.
