Engine Questions on my new to me 1st gen?

I finally got a battery and was able to start up my new to me 1st gen. It had a hiccup and died a couple times when i hit the gas after starting and immediately dying. Also there is a squeal after it warmed up a little. Any thoughts would be great.

...if that truck were new to me I would start off by inspecting it from top to bottom, replace all of the regular maintenance items (inspecting the old components for possible "tells"), replace fluids (again, inspecting what comes out), check timing, etc, etc. After that, then I would would start chasing down issues. .....but that's just me.

Having not listened to the video I would say bad belt, bad bearing in one of the pulleys, etc. Again, start with the basics like mentioned. The belt(s) would be one of those maintenance items I spoke of that I would replace. It's cheap and unless you know when it was last changed it could be quite old and due for replacement anyhow.

I have a stethoscope from Lisle that I use for isolating such noises. It's relatively cheap @ ~ $15. Mine came with a rod attachment (to listen or internal noises by contact) and a hollow tube with a rubber cone on the end to help focus on sounds around certain areas. ....I use the cone to help find exhaust leaks and squeals like you have.

I would guess it's one of the devices (alternator, fan, etc.) run by the belts, so if you change the belts, you may feel looseness in the pulley. I also second the idea of a stethoscope. With everything running, noises can carry, and sound like one spot when it's actually a different spot. I believe Harbor Freight carries a real cheap one. Wouldn't recommend it. Guess how I know.

Looks like it's $20 on Amazon. The ear pieces are not that comfortable but then again, this isn't a tool that you would be using for hours or likely even even minutes on end for that matter. It's well constructed and does the job.

The belts were recently changed, I will get a stethoscope from harbor freight.

I agree. If belt replacement doesn't eliminate the squeal, it's probably a bearing in the final stages of failure. If it's a bearing, the "kinda" good news is that it will get much worse quickly, and therefore much easier to diagnose. The bad news is, don't get too far from home...pushing a bearing beyond failure will likely result in expensive collateral damage.

I second the belts, the alternator belt is my big squeaker when its cold, the adjustment bolt is a pain if you don't have a second hand.

If they are new, just check tightness. If its coughing, the timing could be a bit off.
