engine rattle in 05 vvti v6

Hello. My 05 v6 4runner has developed a rattle at idle that transitions to a whine at higher rpm's. Coming from left front of the engine. Sound familiar to anyone? We are 900 miles from home ending a 5500 mile road trip. She's still runnin so we're still goin. Thanks for the help.

Did you make sure it is not the a/c clutch / compressor? - does the noise go away when you turn the a/c on and off? If not, then it sounds like a pully (not familliar with your engine) is going bad. They tend to rallle and grind at idle, then as speed increases do exctly what you say. These things can often be drivable for a long time, and you can get home no problem. Just be sure to be very attentive as if a pully does go, you will loose power steering.
Bearings tend to die a slow death.

But that doesn't mention anything about the noise becoming a whine at higher RPM's. Might still have a look and see if it gives you any ideas.

The idea of it being the ac pulley bearing occurred to me too. Didn't really change turning the ac on and off but that probly doesnt rule it out. Could be the power steering pump cause the whine is kinda like that but sound not coming from there. Still rollin.

I have an 03 that developed a whine last August. It is still whining, It varys with engine rpms. I took the serpentine belt off and cranked it up and the whine disappeared. I need to find out what is causing the problem and have it fixed.

with the belt off, spin every pully by hand. odds are its a bearing. was in my case.
