Engine sputter's makin me NUTZ!

Greetings all. My 94 is driving me a bit crazy! I took it in for smog, which it passed no sweat. Drove it the mile home & shut it down. Hopped in a couple hrs later to hit the store, & noticed a weird sputtering at higher rpm's. About 2500 & over. I was busy, didn't give it a lot of thought. Well, that was 4 days ago, & its gotten more persistent since. Feels like a vac leak, or fried plug wire. I did the starting fluid thing-nada. I checked all the wires-nada. I realize there could be a bad plug wire without me being able to detect it. I pulled the dist. cap & hit the contacts with a wire wheel. But it actually looked good. No moisture, wiped it out anyway. I blew a head gasket in a camry a year or so ago, & this doesn't exhibit any of the usual tell-tale symptoms. In fact, upon 1st startup of the day, it runs great, for about the 1st minute. Or longer if I keep the rpm's up. but the moment I slow to stop, the hiccupping starts. And keeps on pretty consistently. But, every now & then it'll just smooth out, & she pulls hard for 5 or 10 secs. Then, it's back. That's another reason I think this is an elusive tuning issue. Blown head gaskets don't come & go. So please, yota gurus, advise me! Where do I look next, or is it time to start replacing caps & plugs & wires & so on? I'm extremely monetarily challenged(broke as hell), so I have to be strategic. Being able to draw on a veritable plethora of knowledgeable cats is GOLD! Thanks all.

It hasn't been in the 3 yrs I've had it. I'll handle that. Should be done anyway. Would a clogged filter give me brief lapses of good running tho?

Short answer, yes. I would definitely look in to the plugs and wires as well. If they are not OEM Denso/NGK I would replace for safe measure. Small price to pay for assurance that you have no issues there.
