Engine stalling during idle...

My 2000 just started doing the same thing ~ seems to stall worse with A/C on at red light/idle. Going to have code read & follow the IAC chain of fixes...

Ape-x, I'm trying your remedy tomorrow. I drove from CA to Vegas and the thing was fine. On my way back I stopped in Victorville to get gas and it hesitated. I was thinking it was maybe a bad tank of gas or the fuel filter which I am replacing tomorrow also.

I replaced the fuel filter and cleaned the throttle body and she purrrrrs like kitten now. Completely fixed the issue, thanks guys!

I have a 1999 4runner with 200,000 got with 150,000 miles on heads went out after 3 months got repaired and was fine after that until my wife started telling that the car was stalling and not idle. So read lots of post and check all the emissions. change spark plugs and wires and fuel filter and did oil change transmission oil as well nothing. clean the egr valve and change the module on top of the egr valve nothing. air filter nothing So what i did was removed the throttle body and cleaned the idle control valve and change the gaskets and wow been working fine since that was done. just the error of the check engine still there is P0402 that i think has to be with the cat converter. if any one has resolve that issue with P0402 let me know thanks.

Stall during Idle solved

soo its been about 2 weeks since i've cleaned the IAC..it was pretty nasty when i took it apart..cleaned it down to the metal. BUT still my problem is there. engine actually shut off at traffic light last week.

any other ideas?

I had the same problem. Had my mechanic clean and ultimately replace the IAC. Problem persisted. Removed and thoroughly cleaned MAF and solved the problem. Planning to clean throttle body for good measure soon.

just of interest....my problem was a high idle, turned out to be the IAC coil was bad. a week ago I posted a thread "manually operating the IAC". well I had already ordered one of these expensive parts so I went ahead and installed it, perfect idle BUT exactly the same as manually adjusting the idle with a dab of epoxy on the armature to the base! If you have a failed IAC and don't want to spend the dough on a new one, this works great, also I found if you just plug in the removed coil you don't get the CEL.

not sure its your problem, but when my throttle position sensor was going out it would stall sometimes at idle. it eventually threw a code. i confirmed it by monitoring my throttle position sensor with the torque app on my phone. i just had it do a line graph for the sensor, and you could see little blips while i was driving and when it died at idle.

my flip phone has a built in camera! unbelievable what these smart phones can do in the hands of those that know how to use em! :nerd:

Update: after about 500 miles of highway driving running perfect...problem returned and threw running rich code. mechanic has had it for 3 days and can't figure it out..says its running fine for them...may try fuel filter but frustrated for sure!

Stalling Randomly

Just yesterday, stopped for groceries on my way home, maybe 20 minutes, and the truck wouldn't stay on after starting. Died several times trying to start it. Finally threw the e-brake while I had it in neutral and hit the gas right after starting and it would stay on. If I dropped off the gas, it would plummet and the engine would cut out again. Gas light had come on just before, so I made it across the street to fill up. Died on startup after.
Hammered on the gas again to get the next 1 mile home. Thankful for a manual transmission so I could hold an idle without stalling at the few stop signs.
Car started up just fine after sitting for an hour or two and then this morning it fired up just like normal...

About 2 years ago I replaced the IAC valve and it solved the low idle(not dying back then). No problems since then until now. Anybody figure out the 1/2 hr bad idle problem? why it cuts out then, but works other times?

How many miles on your truck what year? schefuled mainintenance upkeep? clean the maf sensor also fuel filter or fuel pump could be an issue.
