Ultimately I would say it wasn't worth it. With the 2005 engines you aren't addressing the weak rods. In fact, introducing VVT-i into the equation only makes it worse because of the higher compression ratio that accompanies VVT-i. Your best bet it to get better rods. Lextreme makes some STOUT rods so that would solve your problem. Heres a link:
I was thinking about replacing the rods, but due to the amount of work involved, balancing issues, $$, etc, I am planning to tune to a max of 400hp.
That still gives better than 10% cushion, and I may not be making that anyways. My target is 375-400hp (with ~21% loss I've seen quoted for the drivetrain, that's about 300-320 rwhp)
