engine tempeture?

what do you guys suggest? when i turned my car on today it was warm out it started out at 68 degrees ten min or so of light driveing it got to i would say operating ten of 193-200 degrees normal? what would be a good tem to warm up to before i start to drive? cause i know it isnt good to drive on a cold engine, what do you guys sugest?

me personaly if its cool out i let it warm up a min or so....mornings when it is really cold 5-10 min 10 if i see ice....

I take off immediately. The trick is to not redline the engine while its cold. I am just easy on it for the first minute or two. I would probably wait if it was below 20 outside.
 
a few weeks ago it was -20 out. at that temp mine would never reach 170. i had all sorts of problems when it was that cold. everything was frozen.

but because ive had my ultra gauge for a while i knew it was just too cold out. for me 195-203 is normal. but its usually around 198 on long drives.

yes your temps are normal and look good. what are you using to view your data? JW?

ultragauge lol its one of the reasons i picked it up,another way to max the life of the vehicle you know...im more worried about a good range to start driveing at,on a 70 degree day ill warm up for 30 seconds but on those super cold mornings is what i am worried aboit...
 
The only reason I let my truck run in the morning is for MY comfort. Starting it and going right away doesn't negatively affect much.

Oh, I also let it warm up when it's cold so it doesn't do the annoying not shifting into 3rd gear until 2,700rpm thing.

what exactly are you worried about? Do you think running it for 30 seconds is somehow better/an improvement over hopping in and going? lol.
 
i dont let mine warm up until it gets below freezing, then if its only for a min or so. when it gets below 10 ill let it warm up for 5 min. your not going to hurt anything just taking off when its 70 outside.

you won't hurt anything taking off right away when it's 10 degrees out, either. Years and years ago, people had to let their cars warm up on cold days, not because it was somehow better for the engine, but because they had carburetors.

i let it warm up regardless for the 3o seconds to get to oil to flow over everything....i dunno old habbits die hard....lol
 
i have to let mine warm up when its below freezing because i have water somewhere in my brake system and its freezes, and i have no power brakes. its not safe driving around with no power brakes...

yes i have to let my mustang warm up before i go tear up the town.

nah, it's not the moisture that's freezing, it's a failing brake booster check valve. Kind of common, the valve gets sticky when really cold, not allowing any vacuum assist. It'd cost ya about $40 to fix.
 
I want to point out that I was a Machinist Mate in the USN, on ships that relied on "rented" reduction gears, and know a little bit here... cold engine = cold oil. Cold oil is LEAST "productive" whereupon oil at it's optimal temp IS. Viscosity is the key word here, and the USN definition at the time was "a fluid's resistance to flow through a specified aperture in a specified time" and is GREATLY related to it's abilites to reduce engine stress.

So, I suspect we want our oil as warm as possible before putting it in drive. FWIW I have a Scanguage ll and am always in drive at 85F, regardless of how cold it is outside. BTW my normal operting temps, driving up and down HUGE hills and mountains at 55-70mph (Colorado foothills, just W of Denver, not really that cold here this year), are usually around 130-180 for the trans, 195-200 for the engine. Hope this helps. (Running a trans cooler sepreate from rad)

I think you'd have a much better point if we were all dumping SAE 30 in our trucks. Since we're not, it's pretty much a moot point.

Great point(s) but you have to agree that oil does not reach ideal specs until warmed up, and ALSO that any over exertion of engine and tranny prior to optimal operating temps is bad. Which is why I bought a remote start :hug: as far as I'm concerned, once that thermo opens and engine begins to idle down, I am in motion. As far as I am concerned, only people in colder climates (MN, IA, ND, WY) should find this info relevant.
