Engine /Transmission woefully outdated!

The sales figures do speak though. With that said, these people are the reason Toyota can keep manufacturing a truck for 10 years straight with only facelifts. I'm sure these are the same demographic of people that said that they didn't need a smartphone when the iPhone came out.

...and look how many more they keep selling (and @MSRP+) by simply adding a set of shocks everyone was adding aftermarket and slapping a "Pro" badge on it.

I guess Toyota trucks are a bit of a cult. I think the Rubicon is superior in most aspects, but if I had to choose between that and a 5th Gen Pro I wouldn't even think twice. It's instinctual and I trust the 4Runner more. I just think that the 5th gen is more irrelevant in relation to its time period than any generation prior. I mean really, a FIVE speed auto? In 2018? Like dudes, the 1984 4Runner had a four speed auto. That was pretty impressive in 1984 when three speeds were the norm. So after 34 years, the latest 4Runner only has one gear extra? A five speed auto was exotic stuff in 1994, but times have changed.

With that said, the new Tacoma is a pile of shit. I'll take the dated engine and tranny combo over that 3.5 and six speed any day. I guess we can't trust Toyota to innovate anymore, at least for the light truck segment.

The Rubicon, the T4R seems more comfortable human and road manner-wise, purely empirical of course. The Tacoma has lacked any viable competition for at least the last decade, that new Ranger and Colorado I think are going to change that. Still the T4R has no direct competitor apart from the Rubicon footprint, capability, and cargo size.

When I went from my 3rd gen to this it was a nice move up, I thought. A lot of differences (apart from the 5AT different tranny but same gear count) certainly more complexity, happy none-the-less. I am honestly shocked how many of these I see getting gobbled up. I am happy to have the older "ugly" one :D
